In the last year, there's been a plethora of entrants to the field of link building services outside the traditional software basis of reversing competitors' backlinks (like our Link Intersect, LAA or Open Site Explorer tools) and consulting/direct purchase. In this post, I'll try to cover some of the interesting major new services, as well as present some long-standing options that some SEOs may not have discovered.
I've segmented the services below into unique sections to help differentiate the types of link building they offer. Some are more service-based, others are pure-software and the first section is more visibility-based than direct link acquisition.
Zemanta
One of the unique offerings in the last few years, Zemanta lets publishers submit a feed of content or images to them, which then appear in front of bloggers in the "composition" window (while they write their posts). These are labeled as "related posts" and have multiple benefits:
- They can improve branding amongst a blogging audience (as bloggers will see your site/brand name while they write)
- They can draw in direct links (if the blogger chooses to link to your work in the post or as a "related post" at the bottom - or through links from image references)
- They can attract direct traffic from the bloggers themselves, who are likely to click on links/content that appears to be interesting
You can try Zemanta's service via a demo on their site
Zemanta has (according to their team) been approved by Google's search quality folks as a white-hat service (which makes sense since all they're doing is showing advertising content to writers, who then determine if they want to link or not) and is now included in Wordpress and Blogger.
SEOmoz has been using them for over a year now (we started with a trial and continued on) and we've seen good results - we tend to get a half dozen or so links to our content (the blog and YOUmoz) each month which can be seen through their reporting system (which has some upgrades in the works).
*Other than our paid use of the service, SEOmoz does not have any affiliations with Zemanta or its founders.
MyBlogGuest
From founder Ann Smarty, MyBlogGuest provides a platform for those seeking to write and receive guest posts. The service is relatively simple, but potentially quite powerful. If a reasonable number of quality blogs and sites participate in the marketplace, the opportunities for providing great posts and receiving traffic and links back are tremendous (as are the opportunities for those seeking more content and relationships).
Blogging is an inherently social field and while the links may be a primary driver for many interested in the site, Ann has made it clear that she hopes deeper relationships will emerge from the connections. The site's layout and signup process are impressive and compelling, though driving action once inside the platform could still use a bit more polish.
The marketplace is currently based on a forum connections system
You can read more about the project in SearchEngineLand's interview with Ann from February.
I'll be surprised if some Silicon Valley style startups don't pop up to copy this model. Hopefully Ann can stay far enough ahead of the game through a network effect to remain competitive. It's a terrific idea that needs only enough branding and awareness in the space to take off.
*SEOmoz does not have an affiliation with this site, though we have contracted Ann, personally, to do projects for us in the past.
EightFoldLogic's Linker
Originally known as Enquisite, EightFoldLogic, a software company with offices in Victoria BC and San Francisco has recently launched a marketplace of their own for website owners of all stripes called "Linker." The premise is similar to MyBlogGuest, but the audience is wider and the interface more customized for creating one-to-one, private connections.
Linker enables the creation of "criteria" much like personal ads for linking connections
Within a day of signing up in a single category, I had four potential "matches"
Linker's goal is to connect sites and marketers interested in partnerships or link relationships with one another. Since their service ends at the time of connection, the method of obtaining the link is up to the parties involved. This means plenty of white hat options, but also potential gray hat ones - however, EightFoldLogic's Richard Zwicky and the audience they've traditionally attracted lean white hat, so I expect this won't be an issue unless the audience changes substantially.
The concept of marketplaces for link acquisition and connecting to site owners interested in links is a compelling one, but the key, as with MyBlogGuest above, will be achieving the critical mass of users necessary to make the service valuable. To that end, Linker's made their product completely free for the next couple months - you can sign up here.
*SEOmoz provides link data via our API to EightFoldLogic but does not have a financial stake in the company or this product.
Whitespark's Local Citation Finder
A few months ago, I wrote a blog post about a tactic to grow your Google local/maps rankings that involved a similar principle to the automated tool built by Whitespark and Ontolo.
The concept is to find sites that are included in Google Local's "sources" for maps and local review data that link to or reference multiple sites that rank in the local results. It's a simple idea, but well executed and incredibly useful for those seeking to optimize their local listings. You can try the Local Citation Finder here - results take just a few minutes to be returned.
Enter some data about your site/goals and the citation finder will email you potential sources for listings
As the local results grow in importance and competition, and as the value of having these consistent, multiple listings rises, I suspect this tool will be incredibly popular. I'd love to see further productization around showing more data about the importance/value of particular local listing sites, and some opportunities to help control and manage those listings, but this first version is pretty exciting on its own.
*SEOmoz does not have a financial or product relationship with either WhiteSpark or Ontolo, though we have been talking to the latter about use of our API in other products.
---------------
Although there are dozens of other services I'd love to cover, these are some of the most interesting to me, personally. As always, looking forward to your thoughts and recommendations, too!
Thanks for including My Blog Guest in the list! Yes, I didn't want My Blog Guwst to be seen as link building tool only but being featured at SEOmoz is so much appreciated!
I have a suspicion you why the idea has been SO popular but no one actually ever tried to create a platform like My Blog Guets. It is VERY hard to monetize. Guest blogging only works to its full potential when it is free - when win-win conecpt comes into play (exposure for quality). It is hard to think of a paid model with this concept in mind.
I have tried to and still am. The site has been live since November and our members can testify that we are improving the service every single day and still have a long way to go.
This is my first project like that. I can tell you this is HUGE experience to have to build a community like that (and I still do it as a hobby as I have no income from MBG at all yet). The experience is priceless! I am thankful to everyone who has joined me!
I can attest to the value of this service, and Ann does a great job of helping to promote guest posts as well as killing spam. The quality of bloggers participating seems mostly good, and whenever I find something funky I report it and Ann or her staff take care of it.
I've placed a few posts on good blogs through MyBlogGuest, and I have yet to receive a poor quality post from a writer/blogger. It's more than paid for itself.
My Blog Guest is really great Ann. I too dont look at it as a link building tool, but it is a great help for getting unique and great content. Used the service for some of my client sites and was really happy with it. No doubt, MBG is a great service everyone could make use of.
Yes, I surely vouch for the fact that My Blog Guest is not a link building tool but a platform for sharing ideas, news and views by reaching out to a community you want to interact with.
And of course as the platform is based on blogging the great content shared surely builds links in the bargain. According to me the term 'Link Building' itself is a wrong term. Links get built as a part of the web journey of your site and quality web presence of your website .
I'm another big fan of MyBlogGuest :) Aside from the obvious (links, exposure) it's challenged me to be a better blogger - to make more linkable content and come up with more interesting pitches. Writing original articles is somewhat hard work, but it is fun.
It is both fun and absolutely worth it - if you have the right target! Thanks for being loyal member!
I spend countless hours doing linkbuilding but surprisingly enough, like a few others posting here, I don't use MBG for links. It has been realllly great in getting content. I've even grabbed a few bloggers that have become weekly/monthly contributors.
Thanks Ann!
Great to hear that, Mike! Thanks for the feedback!
I've used MBG for the past two monts and it has worked wonders for building quality content as well as relationships for my blog. We've signed up over 31 guest authors and counting thanks to MBG! Like you Mike, I do use it more for building content than links myself.
I should add that I would use MBG more for building links, but I don't have a budget to hire writers and my own time limitations don't permit a great deal of opportunities for guest posting.
That's great to hear! Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks for featuring the Whitespark Local Citation Finder Rand! A few notes about the tool:
Mozzers, please let me know what you think of the tool and let me know if you have any suggestions for improvements. You can reply to the email you get from the tool when your results come in.
We are working on an advanced version of the tool that does WAY more.
Darren (@EdmontonSEO)
Great tool Darren. I am extremely excited to start using it as I have been getting more into local result seo lately.
Thank you again,
UCLABruin
Yes! I featured it at SEJ once and can tell you it's a valuable tool. Good job!
Aw shucks Ann. Thanks!
My Blog Guest is genius. It's perfect for my clients that can't find the time to write for their blogs, and that's pretty much most of my clients ;)
I thought that company name sounded familiar :) Looks like a great idea - congrats!
Great tool Darren. Really an effective tool. Waiting for the advanced version.. Great job!!
Darren you guys really did a fantastic job with the citation finder. It's literally become one of my biggest resources for finding local links. It's saved me so much time and I cannot wait for the move advanced version. Keep up the good work!
I am excited to give it a try!
Thanks for this. I've used MyBlogGuest with success, but as noted, the audience is a bit small. The site could use some sprucing up for reputation boosting's sake - of course, a post like this will help them too. EightFoldLogic needs a serious redesign on their main page - although it's a good looking site, I had no clue what they offered until you told me about it again here -- even though I've been to the site before. I shouldn't have to dig to figure it out.
As far as I see, Zemanta only requires you submit here to get recommended: https://www.zemanta.com/fan/addfeed/
Yet you say you started on a free trial and ended up paying? This doesn't seem to add up to me, am I missing part of the process?
you answered one of my questions... as I typed it... is Google Instant leading to psychic abilities in users? I suppose if it did, you would already know what I typed here.
Thanks for the link Ross.
Heck, I use Zemanta, but didnt even know you could add your blog feed to their list! Just added mine now :)
I have to agree on the site design of eightfoldlogic. I too couldn't figure out what the service was they were offering. Until they sent me an email for free "introductions" I didn't sign up. After signing up I received probably 5 or 6 connections. They give you an email address. I also approved a handful of connections where the other site owner would have recvd my email address to contact.
The problem with this model is that there is no follow up or accountability in place on users. I have not received one email response from any of the sites I was connected with. Further, I have not recvd one email from a site owner/admin who recvd. my email address to connect.
But there's no way to report the other users who do not respond. I think it's still fairly new and everyone is probably just adding their sites just to see what the experience is like. Just a guess though.
How did you figure out that Eightfoldlogic has a MyBlogGuest style function? I can't make heads or tails of their website. If anyone can point me toward a EFL page which can get me started with link building through them, I will gladly consider their service.
Of the four I've actually played with My Guest Blog (and suggested few months ago here). And surely I'm going to start taking serious advantages from him in the next future, as I'm getting italian websites that needs to also contents in english. The idea is very good and the quality of the posts are without any doubt high.
I knew Whitespark... and - ok I know I'm boring - well, it still has not implemented Google.it or .es. Anyway, with some tweaks, for instance, using only keywords in italian or spanish and calling the city in the "original language" version you can still find useful citations. If you start using english there can be problems (Naples Italy vs Naples FL... Roma Italy vs. Rome ??)...
The other two, just signed up to Enquisite (hey, it's free, so why not give it a try?) and I will check also Zemanta.
But the best lesson I've taken from this post is: boy, if things like these a not so common in the USA imagine in Italy and Spain... gotta find a way to invent an Italian/Spanish version of platform like these one. So... give me the money! ;)
I added com.br for Brazil, but it doesn't seem to work very well. The problem is that the server is located in the U.S. and so the queries to Google return different results than if you are actually searching from a computer located in Brazil. Strangely, it seems to work ok for co.uk though. Perhaps it has to do with the language being used.
In order to get the tool to work properly in different countries, I'll need to setup servers in each country, then direct the queries to the country-specific servers. As this is a free tool, I can't justify the cost of setting up hosting accounts around the world. If you know someone willing to donate a web hosting account in Italy or Spain, let me know and we'll get those TLDs added for you!
Anyone from other countries interested in donating some hosting space from a local web host, let me know, and we'll make the tool work in your country too!
Darren
whitespark works very well in the Google Australia space, I have tested and received very good results here , so can attest, all good in the land down under with whitespark getting relevant citations
Good to know! Thanks.
Nice finds!
It looks like Zemanta promotes paid content with a "promoted" tag. Or at least thats what the demo appears to show. Does anyone know if they only promote submitted stuff, or do they scan the web... I'm just curious about copyright issues.
Personally I like , no wait... I love finding new tools! Thanks Rand!
I'm not sure about promoted stuff of Zemanta but they find relevant links from the blog which are in their database. Quick way is by adding your feed into their database using this link: https://www.zemanta.com/fan/addfeed/ You might like to ping them on Twitter, coz some time they are slow in accepting links...
Excellent, thanks!
I have no idea about the 3 valuable link building services but only Myblogguest. Let me try this others 3, hope this work well same as Myblogguest.
Same here! One of my SEO guru and friend told me about MyBlogGuest and I have been using them since last month and have been a great success so far. Now I need to check other 3 sites too.
MBG is awesome for guset blogging and I love it. I have used zementa for some of my blogger blogs and it is nice tool to find images and related post links for the post written. Whitespark is again a great tool from Darren and love the service. EightFoldLogic is new to me. Sounds impressive and need to try it. Great resources shared again. Thanks Rand!
Whitespark is awesome for me. Really helpful and the data is invaluable. It's saved me hours of work because I used to do a lot of this type of link mining manually.
Rand I would love another post like this highlighting some others you find interesting.
I had used MBG before and its great...however, I was not familiar with WhiteSpark or "Linker" and I've already had great results from both.
Got any more hidden gems?
We can do https://www.webuildpages.com/consulting/link-consulting.htm same but half price + from higher PageRank websites. Jim's service is good as well, but it's not cheap, only authority links. We also sell much cheaper PR0-PR4 backlinks packages, 16k backlink packages which will boost keywords as competitive as "flowers".
I love the Whitespark Local Tool - try it... it's easy to use and a great resource for quality Local citation building :-)
Used only MyBlogGuest with good results. Didn't even know about other 3 services. Thanks Rand!
nice nice nice and did I say nice?
very practical and useful article thank you much
I've used Whitespark and it is very cool. The others are new to me but seem to employ some clever approaches. Thank you for sharing.
valuable link building is more essential to become master in your niche..
Nice, I will try them !
I haven't used any of these services to date but I will absolutely give it a try. My only worry is that if these guest blogging sites get popular, they will need to make sure they have a large enough staff to moderate the posts. It's only a matter of time until the article spinner users try to take advantage of sites like these.
These people are everywhere and they are restless :) But the good thing is that each blog owner is interested in maintaining high quality and they won't approve spunn articles/
All of these seem fun, fun, fun! Thanks for introducing them. I think Eight Fold Logic is the most interesting to me so far. Looking forward to digging deeper.
Thank you for the great review. Now I know what I will be doing for Sunday before superbowl. hah.
Thanks for the information and link resources. I know this is 2 years old but will check the sites out...
Good info. Thanks. Myblogguest is my preferred choice.
Thanks a lot for this review. I took some useful ideas for SEO )
https://www.eightfoldlogic.com/ is a PR0 whilst the others are 6,4 and 6. Any reason for this?
Just a heads up, but the Linker site allows you to make up to 5 connections within a 14 day "free trial" period. Beyond your 5 "requests to connect," I believe a popup message said you have to pay $9.95.
It's still a great idea & will hopefully provide some meaningful connections. However, if you don't think through who you would like to exchange links with (like I did; since I do things quite fast), you might waste your 5 connects & the ability to see if you would really like to use the service.
Nevertheless, thanks for the idea Rand.
My Blog Guest is amazing not only in building links but also in networking, the more time you spend on any of those websites the better links you will get and give you more value in the long run,
Marios
Exactly. What needs to be done to make the tool work is to commit. Without spending time there networking, you won't achive much.
Thanks rand, any blogs about new places to obtain links are the best posts you can write.
Awesome Post! I'm signing up for Linker now =) let's see how this bad boy works!
Thanks for the review Rand!
We are working hard to connect great content with great bloggers. To that end, we suggest content from both our partners as well as any informative site we can find from across the web.
If you have any questions regarding zemanta, you can get more info at zemanta.com/outreach or ping us @zemanta. We would love to hear your feedback.
Thanks
Greg Gortz
A very good list here. Thanks Rand. I have signed up immediately for 2 of them, and I'll consider the other 2.
Great outline of some truly great resources. Had previously used 3 of the 4 with good results so now I'm gonna have to go check out EightFoldLogic.
I have used only MyBlogGuest with effective outcomes but rest of the sites I don't know. Thanks Rand!
I've used MyBlogGuest.com extensively for guest blogging and I can definitely say it's awesome. I also would like to mention that BloggerLinkUp.com (a very similar service) has also been very helpful. When the community becomes large with any of these services, it is excellent, but until that time, using multiple services makes sense for me.
What an impact on My Guest Blog, since this post went out the amount of extra people signing up to the site is 10 fold that of the usual amount of new people/sites joining.
Good post. I think the Zemanta functionality is great. It`s another useful way of displaying links or logos whilst people post blogs, also enabling them to link to it. Ideal exposure for minimum effort.
Thanks charlieB29. Glad you like Zemanta!
I have never really had much success with tools like these. They have always tended to promote link exchanges or greyer, really grey things. However, with the good things people are saying about myblogguest.com I will take a closer look at them and may check out Zemanta too since it integrates well with Wordpress. Thanks for the knowledge.
I'll be testing them over the next few weeks. Great post!
Excellent post Rand. I have used Zemanta quite a few times in the past. While I personally despise the obtrusiveness of their WP plugin, I find it useful when seeking external citations.
I have myblogguest to be extremely beneficial for link building. Don't know how I worked without it :)
Nice
I was actually busy with something else but now found myself signing SEOgadget up for Zemanta - something about links that I love!
:-)
Thanks Richard. We are fans of SEOGadget too. Lots of great info.
Do you see this as a growing sub-sector of online marketing? That is should we get bigger and better options in the months ahead?
I have experience with myblogguest.com -- its a great service. I am always less concerned with the 'PR' the website thats posting my articles but the amount of readers they have. Links are great, but if nobody is reading the article why did I spend my time writing them?
I dont have experience with the other tools but I will definitely be checking them out soon!
Which 1 would you choose?
