Excellent guides & tutorials Ellie!
Another useful Pro tool is the Moz Crawl Test - a full run-down of the insights provided by this test, is available here.
We use this tool in a number of ways to dig deeper into a clients website. Some tips for viewers:
1) When an enquiry first comes in (one that isn't easily checked) run this report right at the outset. Why? It can a little time to report back with findings, so running this test first while you're investigating other, non-technical website details means it's working for you while you're busy looking at other elements.
2) As soon as you get the report back, add filters to the column headings and bold them. Why? It'll be easier to review (with bolded headings) and quicker to spot issues (with a drop-down filter)
3) Remove all filtered columns that do not include issues - focus on those columns that have them.
4) It's an excellent tool for reviewing a websites URL hierarchy, in a number of ways:
a) Sorting the list alphabetically will show subsets of directories - good for spotting semantically-rich groups of pages, possible topic cannibalisation and URL click depth issues. Separate problematic URL groups onto new tabs.
b) Another good reason to sort alphabetically - separate pages into Landing, Peripheral (About Us, Contact Us, Testimonials, Latest News etc) & Blog Posts to provide clarity. If an eCommerce site, separate into category, products listings and product pages.
4) Unless you're reviewing a very large website, set yourself a time limit to review issues therefore avoiding "paralysis of analysis" syndrome and remember - not all issues are "Oh no! The website will crash and burn!" issues.
5) I'm sure Moz won't mind me mentioning this, but using this tool with Screaming Frog (and it's many features) provides a powerful arsenal of data insights, especially for larger sites, eCommerce or content-heavy blogs.
Lastly, for fast feedback and "reasons why" input, I'd also suggest using Moz's Page Grader. For newbies, this is a great way to learn and understand the elements of on-page optimisation (and why they're important). For newbies, use this detailed post from Rand (and check the comments) as a resource.
Thanks so much for sharing your own Moz tool protips, Tony! These are terrific ideas for Moz users, old and new! I love hearing about how you're using Crawl Test. :) I'd like to add that we have a Crawl Diagnostics section built into Moz Analytics (under the "Search" tab) that is helpful for diagnosing site issues.
Thanks also for tweeting me. I enjoyed our chat! Let me know if you have other ideas to share. We're all ears!
Instead of bolding, you can always go to the first cell below the column headings, cell A2, and click ctrl+T which will turn it into a table. Makes it easy to filter from the dropdowns in the menu headings.
Damn you Ellie and the Moz Team!! Great video and great use of your Moz Analytics, FollowerWonk etc. These tools just became much more interesting and I will definitely try it out.
The next level series sounds good, and especially if they target Moz users :-) Good Work!
Thanks René! I'm really glad you liked the videos. We had fun with them. Definitely try out some of the tips and let us know what you think! :)
I will, thanks :-)
Great idea for a new series. Love how you kept things short and to the point but still had some fun with them. Time to head over to Followerwonk and give it the attention it seems to deserve!
Even Emperor Palpatine recognizes Followerwonk's greatness. ;)
Such a great content with full of information ,
The uses of different tools increased amazingly in recent years to get the success in SERP but these 10 tips are unique and will sure help to research well for clients .
Specially the Followerwonk is perfect tool to target right audience .
Thank you MOZ and Ellie for this nice post.
Nice! I made some notes and learned a few new tricks. Thanks for the post.
As a side note, I had to use a computer that didn't have all of my tools on it ... without the Mozbar I felt naked!
Finding out what time to tweet (#1) has been so, so valuable for me. I always assumed it would be lunchtime GMT, but it turned out to be 4-5pm-ish (hometime for the UK, mid-morning for the US). I have another client whose best time is 10am, and another client where it's pretty much consistent throughout the working day (from 9am to 5pm), so it's important to realise that you can't just assume that the best time for one account is the best time for everyone, and that different industries in different locations can see different stats. Followerwonk is so handy for that.
Also, looking forward to Moz Local expanding beyond the US (hint hint)...! ;-)
An excellent blog post of helpful tips MOZ. I will share with my team and get them utilising these features! Especially like the improvements to the MOZBAR
I have heard so much about moz tools . I am thinking to give it a try .
Woow Ellie and Moz Team. The next level for MOZ really seems damn interesting. Great use of existing tools.
It was a "refresh" for Moz marketers. Thank you for pointing out.
Excellent video tutorials guide. Followerwonk is really good tool to use.
This is a great resource! I especially love the Star Wars metaphor and use of story in the first video - very easy to track with.
Awesome stuff Ellie. These tools really help us to hook new customers. Love your work.
Ellie, Thank you for these fantastic videos! A couple of questions: Does Moz have a tool that helps track the best time to update to Facebook with content that includes a link back to the main website? What about tools that track the best time to post elsewhere? I really would like to know the best times to post to topic-specific forums as well. I understand that a lot of site owners and marketers manually track individual forums for high traffic periods, but I think it would be better to have a tool that can look at trends over different periods (i.e. day, week, month, et cetera). Additionally, do you have a similar tool for discovering who to target on Facebook and other social networks? I think Twitter is a great resource. I believe strongly that everyone should use it to find new customers. I also believe that site owners shouldn't forget about the opportunities on Facebook and elsewhere. Note: I have already used Klout. I'm curious about your tool options.
Hey Todd! Moz does not have a tool that tracks the best time to update Facebook or post in forums, or a tool that tells you who to target on Facebook. If you have a Moz Analytics campaign, though, the "Social" section can show you your most engaging posts on Facebook, Twitter and Google+. And our Followerwonk tool can help you find the best time to tweet on Twitter. The first video in the above post tells you how to do this! :) Hope that helps!
Excellent tutorial. I was able to learn new tricks. I especially liked the ability to target Twitter.
Thank you too much, that really helps :)
Awesome - glad that helped! Rock on!

A good place to learn more about Moz Pro would be to look at our tour at https://moz.com/products/pro.
All of the links in Moz blog comments are not followed (so they won't help you with SEO), and they're removed if they're off topic.
