We're very excited to announce the 2015 Online Marketing Industry Survey is ready. This is the fifth edition of the survey, which started in 2008 as the SEO Industry Survey, and has also been known as the Moz Industry Survey. Some of what we hope to learn and share:
- Demographics: Who is practicing inbound marketing and SEO today? Where do we work and live?
- Agencies vs. in-house vs. other: How are agencies growing? What's the average size? Who is doing inbound marketing on their own?
- Tactics and strategies: What's working for people today? How have strategies and tactics evolved?
- Tools and technology: What are marketers using to discover opportunities, promote themselves, and measure the results?
- Budget and spending: What tools and platforms are marketers investing in?
This year's survey was redesigned to be easier and only take less than 10 minutes. When the results are in we'll share the data freely with you and the rest of the world, along with the insights we've gleaned from it.
Survey importance
By comparing answers and predictions from one year to the next, we can spot trends and gain insight not easily reported through any other source. This is our best chance to understand exactly where the future of our industry is headed.
Every year the Industry Survey delivers new insights and surprises. For example, the chart below (from the 2014 survey) lists average reported salary by role.
One of the data points we hope to discover is if these numbers go up or down for 2015.
Prizes. Oh, fabulous prizes.
It wouldn't be the Industry Survey without a few excellent prizes thrown in as an added incentive.
This year we've upped the game with prizes we feel are both exciting and perfect for the busy inbound marketer. To see the full sweepstakes terms and rules, go to our sweepstakes rules page. The winners will be announced by June 15th. Follow us on Twitter to stay up to date.
Grand Prize: Attend MozCon 2015 in Seattle
Once again, the Grand Prize includes one ticket to MozCon 2015 plus airfare and accommodations. This is your chance to see greats like Wil Reynolds, Cindy Krum, Rand Fishkin and more over 3 days in Seattle. Plus experience lots of networking and social events. Moz is also covering the cost of the flight plus hotel room.
2 First Prizes: Apple Watch
Shhhhhh! Because we're giving away two Apple Watches. These aren't available to the general public yet, which make them mysteriously awesome.
10 Second Prizes: $50 Amazon.com gift cards
Yep, 10 lucky people will win $50 Amazon.com gift cards. Why not buy yourself a nice book? Maybe this one?
Help with sharing!
The number of people who take the survey is very important! The more people who take the survey, the better and more accurate the data will be, and the more insight we can share with the industry.
So please share with your co-workers. Share on social media. Share with your email lists. You can use the buttons below this post to get you started, but remember to take the survey first!
I think it is correct to copy/paste who are the eligible for the prizes, as it is well clear in the first point of the sweepstakes rules:
This Moz 2015 Survey Sweepstakes (the “Sweepstakes”) is open only to legal residents of the following regions: U.S., Canada (excluding Quebec), Brazil, Argentina, UK, France, Germany, Austria, Ireland, Finland, Greece, Portugal, Switzerland, Japan, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, India and New Zealand, who are of the age of majority in their state/province/country of residence at date of entry.
If you are like me, resident in a not eligible country, do the survey despite of that, because the results are going to offer a wonderful portrait of our industry. So, the more people do it, the better is the portrait.
Excellent point. Our legal team makes sure we follow both international and US law when running sweepstakes, and we carefully stick to those regulations.
One thing to add is that after the survey is closed, Moz will make all the data freely available (minus email addresses and other identifiable information) to anyone in the world who wants it. In the past, marketers have used this data to inform their own strategies, and also to produce content pieces such as this salary report from the UK.
Good to see Australia is in there! Time to do the survey (and win the main prize of course :P)
Two questions about this. You will see online streaming? There is the possibility of filing for download?
It looks very interesting.
How fun! This is my first year participating in the survey :-D
Thanks Erick for helping us out. Here's to wishing you luck in the sweepstakes as well!
I like the Moz surveys because I always find new tools listed in the questions. Worth doing the survey just to get the list of tools and check the ones I ignored previously. :-)
I'm happy to make my first survey. i encourage
Like Erick it was my first time taking the survey as well, got me thinking a little on what needs to be improved where I work. Will be good to see the results, see if there are a few of us with the same pain points =)
These surveys are great references, I find myself coming back to check stats every few months
I just wish to be part of Moz con after the prize is announced. Also waiting to see those pie charts in your survey result blog Cyrus.
If I do several of those jobs do I get to add the salaries up?
I don't like Apple but I do want to win the watch since it is so Top Secret... Fingers crossed!
As usual - great concept Mozsters - can't wait to the see the results!
I did this one today too! ! i hope i win!!
Excellent survey! Can't wait to see the results.
This survey helped me open my eyes to some of the areas I feel like I'm slacking in. Can't wait to win that Apple Watch! :)
No Thailand.. :'(
Loved the tools questions, took some screen grabs to check them out tomorrow. My first Moz survey, Looking forward to the results!
My favourite survey of the year ;)
One of the few argentinians who adds data from this country, I hope this year we can have more answers from the country!
First time to take this survey but I liked the questions. Well done Moz!
Nice. Done! :)
Glad to see a survey based on our industry :) I hope we can get some sweepstakes too in the upcoming ones.
Cyrus,
Is there a different survey about industry salaries, or do you use this one?
One thing I'd really like to see is more questions about video. What are salaries like for video? Are most video pros in-house, contractors, etc.? Wistia could be a great resource for getting people to take the survey. Speaking of Wistia - in question 39 it lists Wistia as a social network. Do you think it's a social network?
Great stuff - first time i've contributed!
All the best . I will def go for survey.
Servery is done!
I am very happy first time participating in this program, learner seo man from country of Himalayas, Nepal

Title on the https://moz.com/officialsweepstakesrules page is still set to
<title>2013 Survey Sweepstakes Official Rules - Moz</title>
Might want to update it to 2015.
Nice survey, got me thinking again about the tooling I'm using (took screenshots). Too bad I found out at the end I'm not eligible for any of the prizes because I was definitely counting on prize nr 1. Always wanted to go to MozCon.
wish i was an engineer god damn it! Interesting Survey... Moz, you always do it so good x
Really looking forward to seeing the final results for the survey. I have been putting a tremendous amount of time into improving efficiency recently, I am very interested in seeing what the competition is up to.
I am so excited to know who will be winner.
First time I ever participate in the survey.happy to be a part of this :)
Done Cyrus,,, Well structured survey & wow factor upon the UX & user behavioral tracking.
Hopes to win!
It was interesting to take this survey, as it revealed to me that I spend a lot less time on SEO and analytics than I used to. Sales have decreased somewhat...I'm sure there's a connection!
I find it interesting how many social measurement tools there are out there, but how little "respected" social media sites there are for pushing content and generating leads.
This is the first time i do this survey. Let's do it!
Took the survey and given my opinion :). Interesting questions. Mostly about tools and its usages. May be after publishing row data, many ideas to build new tools will come up.
Oh boy, can't wait to see the results! always exciting to see how SEO compares across the board.
*edit*
Just curious do the Moz team also participate in the survey?
Many of us do participate (though we aren't eligible for the prizes). Thanks for going through it, Chris -- we're excited to see the results, too! =)
I had the same question and am glad to hear Moz team opinions will be reflected in the results.
Taking survey to (of course) see you at Mozcon! :-D
BTW Question 16 says "Find link opportunities and ink penalties"
Thanks, Matt! We'll get that fixed. =)
You beat me to that bit of house keeping. ;)
Very much looking forward to the results of that survey! Might have listed down all of the tools that were mentioned to see if I am missing any of them..
very excited, this is my first time too.......
Hey guys, this survey doesn't work properly for me. It keeps jumping back to the start after it announces prizes to be won and it seems to be an endless loop :(
How do I enter my details to win??
After you go through all of the questions, the last page has an optional field in which you can enter your e-mail address to be entered into the drawing. I'm not eligible, so I'll wish you the best of luck! :)
Ah finally it's here.. Quite hopeful that this time I'm gonna get the MozCon :)
Thanks Cyrus,
Not to be a complainer(even though I still filled out the survey) why would you guys exclude Quebec? Just wondering, love for a clarification if its not to much to ask.
It's not us! It's those Quebecian laws, I swear. Don't you have an aunt in Toronto you can claim? :)
If you are living in two countries, and one of them is listed, I guess you can choose it even if you put in the poll the other one, can't you?
I'm thinking the survey being English only is the problem. Not 100% sure, but having lived in Canada for many years I know Quebec's language laws are are pretty strict.
this is my first Survey
are few questions but is good for we know the informations of world
Thanks Cyrus for sharing the important metrics. i am sure that in the coming year it will be every better. looking forward to see the pie chart of your survey.
Oh waw!!! For the first time I am taking part in Moz survey, very excited.
Thanks Cyrus and Moz team for the survey..! As many other mentioned above it was also my first time taking the survey. Before this survey I participated in another survey by Moz regarding Local search, but this was much valuable as I knew a lot about new marketing tools and diverse social media resources.
Done :)
Unfortunately not eligible for the sweepstakes :(
Just filled out the survey. The results of previous Moz surveys have been very helpful to me, so I'm happy to contribute to this survey.
Interesting article, but I don´t undestand some questions .. I can´t believe the salary by fielt table!!
I like the survey results and how they’re displayed by salary field and job title. If you’re looking to enter the field or to get a better understanding of how your salary should rate, the information is there for the taking. My guess is that salaries have been sweetened across the board since 2013. Marketing spending, across the board, was up over 2013, and this is always a good sign for folks in the SEO business. And now that mobile-search readiness is a deal-breaker, companies will be reaching in their piggy banks. Thanks for the heads up. I could use a new watch.
Seattle I'm coooooming, hopefully;)
This is the first time I doing Survey and it's done, But Unfortunately not eligible for the Sweepstakes.
Very interested to see how other Digital Marketing Managers spend their time. Especially those who have to dabble in SEO, PPC, & Social.
took the survey anyway:)
I'm not sure if I'm suitable to participate but very anxious to see the results for 2015. It's a great surprise to see web design is far below SEO in 2014, I thought it is the other way around. Interesting...
This was a very interesting survey. Some of these tools I have not heard of, I will definitely investigate them to learn more about them. This survey gave me a lot of ideas for blog posts / content creating! Thank you so much.
Haha I took a screenshot of the different tools mentioned so I could investigate them further. Good to know I'm not alone when I see lists like that!
I guess I am not the only one here, I bookmarked some of the tools which were mentioned in the survey lol
I forgot to to do that (take a screen shot). Can you share it Matt? Or someone from Moz? I wouldn't ask, but you can't (for good reason) take the survey more than once to get to the point where I could capture it myself.
Thanks for commenting about it. I was about to quit as I'm not from an eligible country. Made me change my mind for the tools. lol
Good luck everybody, survey done here!
I rarely take surveys, but this one was worth it!
I love surveys
Done.
Can't wait to see the final results. (and of course I want to win that Apple Watch) :D
Done. :-)
FYI - I might've read it wrong, but I have a feeling that the last page of the survey (where you enter your email address) says that the winners will be announced on 29th May, when this post and the rules page say that that's the closing date of the sweepstakes, and that the winners will be announced in mid-June.
Don't shoot me if I'm wrong though. Doing the survey at 9pm on a Friday evening after a large glass of wine might have fried my brain.
