Editor's note: Happy 4th of July! We're off observing our Independence Day, so we decided to celebrate with a non-SEO Whiteboard Friday.
From the undeniable class of a full windsor to the (all too common) mistake of letting our underwear become accidental outerwear, today's modern marketers are prone to some very easily solveable fashion faux-pas. On this Independence Day, we take a quick break from discussing the online world and bring you a whiteboard video on the lighter side. Enjoy!
For reference, here's a still of this week's whiteboard!

Rand: Howdy gang, and welcome to a very special Whiteboard video on men's fashion. Well, so it turns out of all things that, in addition to my deep, deep passion around search and social media and content marketing and all things inbound, I'm also particularly passionate about what guys wear. I hope that I can be helpful in upgrading some of the things that we all wear, because as an industry, occasionally I will go to a conference or an event or someone's office and see things that make me scratch my head and wonder whether women or men, who might be interested in these men, also scratch their head.
Hence, for you today, I have five fashion hacks for the modern male marketer. The first one is don't let your underwear become accidental outerwear. So I'm obviously wearing underwear. I'm not going to show you, sorry, or maybe a good thing. But I'm also wearing underwear underneath this shirt, which you can see here. This is an undershirt. It's underwear.
Now, it turns out that not all men are, let's say, cognizant or fantastic at hiding their underwear. Let me show you what I'm talking about. Ta-da! Look at this brand new undershirt that I am now wearing and which tragically is on display for the whole world to see because I'm wearing a button-up shirt, but I'm not, of course, going to button it all the way to the top. So you're seeing my underwear. Unintentionally my underwear has become outerwear. I just find this, well, not optimized, and as you know, I love optimization.
Unintentionally, my underwear has become outerwear.
I just find this, well, not optimized.
Now let me show you. There is an actual exception to this underwear/outwear rule, and I've asked our head of Big Data, Martin York . . . Martin, would you join me here for a second? So Martin has very wisely, wonderfully worn a ring-collar shirt with a button up. But look, it's a T-shirt. It is not underwear. His underwear is not on display. His T-shirt is on display. This is a totally acceptable way to wear a ring-collar shirt with a button-up shirt and leave the button undone and show it off. No problem at all from a fashion standpoint.
The problem is when you do what I'm doing here. Don't be like me. Wear a V-neck. Thanks Martin.
Another fantastic thing about having an open collared shirt and wearing an undershirt, like a V-neck underneath it, is when I get home, I don't actually need to wash this. I can just put it right back on my hanger in my closet, and then I throw the undershirt in the wash. Undershirts are easy to wash. They're also very inexpensive. If something happens to the undershirt, no problem. It might get a little sweaty during the day, especially filming so many videos.
My second point here, so a lot of times I talk to guys about shoes and footwear, because I'll compliment a guy on what he's wearing. I think it's really cool. I'm obviously deep into footwear, right? I have my yellow Pumas, and I have all sorts of other shoes, and my footwear is just something I'm very passionate about. I love when I get compliments about my shoes, and so I like getting new ones. But I've noticed that many gentlemen have a big challenge around this, which is breaking in those new shoes, and I completely get where you're coming from.
So I'm wearing today a pair of new shoes. I just recently got these. I think I've worn them only once or twice before, and not even the whole day, and they're still breaking in, like they're not quite comfortable yet. A lot of guys I talk to say, "Gosh, I hate when I buy new shoes, because I have to break them in. They take time. That's why I have only my old pair of shoes, or I only wear athletic shoes," or these kinds of things. That's sad, because there's a lot of cool things you can do with footwear.
But there's a trick for breaking in shoes that makes it way more comfortable. It's totally stolen from hikers. Let me show you what I'm talking about. So watch.
I'm not just wearing one pair of socks. I'm wearing two pairs of socks. So I've got this white sock underneath here, which it's a fine sock. No one's going to see it, because it's shorter than the shoe. But then I'm actually wearing a little slip on sock over it, and the reason is I'm breaking in these shoes. Wearing a second pair of socks over them, yeah it uses up an extra pair of socks, but man it's way more comfortable, very easy to break in new shoes. I wear this a couple of days, three days in a row, and this shoe will feel like an old worn pair, which is just awesome. Slides right over and slides right in. Now if I do it right, no one's the wiser.
Number three on my list, it turns out that a lot of men's shirt makers these days are doing some really cool things with kind of fashion details and hidden fashion details. They don't have to be completely hidden. So one of my favorite things is when I buy a shirt, I look inside and I see, "Wow that's really cool," they've got kind of an off color cuff, like the cuff is a different shade, and the inside of the shirt material is a different shade than the outside. I almost want to show that off in some way. But the only time you can do it is when you're putting on the shirt or taking off the shirt, unless you roll up your sleeves in a very clever way. Let me show you what I'm talking about.
All right. Now depending on how OCD you want to be, you can make it look even better than I have here in this short amount of time with no mirror. But you can see what's happened is I've taken the cuff, rolled it up, so that now the exterior of the cuff is actually inside, and the interior is shown off, at least the top of it is shown off. I love that sort of mismatched, interior exposer, showing off the detail of the shirt. It's just a fun way.
The other thing I love about this is, unlike traditional ways of rolling up your cuffs where it often falls down, these don't fall. I've worn it on stage like this, this particular shirt in fact, on stage with the cuffs rolled up, and it doesn't fall off, even if I'm doing my wild hand gesticulating while I'm speaking. So I really appreciate that, and I think it's super cool that you can try this out.
Number four, details aren't just details. In fact, details are a lot of times what makes men's fashion really fun, really enjoyable, really shareable. So I like to do some fun stuff with all kinds of things, my eyeglasses that I wear. I'm wearing contacts right now. Obviously, this ludicrous mustache, which is a whole other story, but playing around with hairstyles.
I actually really enjoy messing around with watches. I've got this one from ZIIIRO that I love. You've probably seen me wear a couple of other ones on Whiteboard Friday.
I have this belt. It's actually a kid's belt. I know that's weird, but it's kind of fun. It's got like these dinosaurs eating toast, like making toast and then eating toast, and then stealing it from each other kind of print on there. A belt is a very hidden thing, like you rarely, rarely see it, especially because so few men tuck in their shirts anymore, which, God forbid, please don't tuck in your shirts, especially not T-shirts. Just don't do it. It's not allowed. I should bring in a gentleman from our engineering team to maybe show that off.
God forbid, please don't tuck in your shirts. Especially not T-shirts.
Just don't do it. It's not allowed.
But in any case, other kinds of details can be really cool too. So one of the things that I love and that has been taking off in popularity in men's fashion is socks and shoe matching. So these are some old sneakers that I've got, which you can see have purple flowers on the side there. So I grabbed some purple polka dot socks that kind of match the color patterns in there, a few of the flowers, and it just makes for fun. It's something that might catch your eye as you're walking by. Details, details.
I'll show you another one. On the topic of undershirts and underwear, it is absolutely appropriate to wear this ring-collar undershirt when I am putting on a suit. I plan to have a tie here. I definitely don't want an undershirt that's going to be V-neck that will show off like a little kind of weird patch of skin underneath the shirt, especially if I'm going to be outdoors, for example, for a wedding or at work or something like that.
Now here in the U.S. it's spring, which means formal events are coming up, a lot of weddings, Bat and Bar Mitzvahs, all kinds of stuff. It also means that a lot of gentlemen are about to make the critical mistake that you see me making right now.
Let's imagine that I'm at a formal event, not at work. I probably wouldn't wear a three piece suit to work, or everybody here would think I was crazy. But what's going on? What am I missing? What am I doing wrong?
It's my necktie. Look at this shabby tie. Can you see? There you go. Look this knot is called a four-in-hand knot, and a four-in- hand is a very, very simple to tie, tie. But it is not a formal necktie knot.
Let me show you how a formal necktie knot looks. I'm going to start with a half Windsor, and I do the full Windsor as well. [Cut to new scene.] Here we have the half Windsor. This is what I call the minimum acceptable bar of necktie knot formality for a wedding or another formal occasion.
Now let's take a look at the full Windsor, which looks even nicer in some ways. [Cut.] Here we have the full Windsor. The full Windsor, as you can see, has this lovely sort of balance to it on both sides. It's very even. It looks like I'm going to some sort of formal British state affair. English state affair? I don't know. The Queen will be there. She probably won't. In any case, what I urge you to do gentlemen is if you're going to a formal event that demands formal wear, please bring with you a formal knot.
If you're going to a formal event that demands formal wear,
please bring with you a formal knot.
Now I'd very much like to thank my colleague Wes. Wes is one of our lead engineers on Moz Local, and Wes has done me the kind favor of committing a horrible fashion crime. He's tucked in his T-shirt. Wes, would you repair that mistake?
Wes: Sure thing.
Rand: Oh my gosh, looking so much better. Please gentlemen, don't tuck. Look, it's fantastic. It doesn't need to go in there. You don't need to show that to people. Thank you, Wes, I appreciate it.
Wes: Oh, you're welcome.
Rand: One of my favorite trends in men's fashion, by the way, is the return of the bow tie. Now I think it looks ridiculous with 99% of outfits, but with a full suit, a three piece, or a tuxedo, a bow tie can make a great accoutrement, and it's actually a little more fun to put on and fun to wear. It can make your outfit a little . . . well go better with a mustache anyway.
Don't cheat by the way. They are challenging to tie, but they're also a lot of fun. These things with the little clip, I don't know what this is. This is like the black hat of bow ties. Don't do it, people.
These things with the little clip ... this is like the black hat of bow ties.
Don't do it, people.
All right, everyone. I have really enjoyed having a little bit of fun, talking some men's fashion with you guys. I'm sure there are going to be some great comments, and if you have questions about this stuff, I'm happy to answer it. I'm not an expert. This is not my field. I just like to have fun in here, and I really enjoy giving a hard time to the guys in my life who happen to tuck in their shirts or wear clip-on bow ties or mismatch their socks.
So when you see me at a conference, be sure and say hi and give me a hard time about whatever I'm wearing, because I need it and I deserve it. Thanks everyone. We'll see you again next time. Take care.
Oh man... That was pretty embarassing. I don't know how I talked myself into filming that. Hopefully everyone here takes it as its meant - tongue-in-cheek, with fun in mind, and given by a total non-expert :-)

Totally understand thumbs down on this video, BTW - I know it's not the usual topic. We just wanted to have a little fun given the holiday here in the US (Independence Day) and likely lower attention to Whiteboard Friday (and all things work-related) as a result.
Windsor FTW !
We are following you guys not because of SEO only, so keep it up :D
color matching is great, however....dont be color stuffing and wearing all violett :D
My! 2 pairs of socks! Might be a good idea in winter, afraid not that in summer, since it is hotter of course! I observed Rand failed to put his black socks fully on before he put shoes on, lol! Might be in a hurry in front of the cam.
One of my favorite memories is of my husband teaching my brother to tie a full Windsor for his prom. Thank you for advocating for attractive neckwear :) #teamfullwindsor
After working in the SEO world for 7 years, I slid down the slippery slope into a midwest (Cincinnati, OH) fashion wasteland. After a year and a half in the financial services world, I thought I was living the dream where I could wear whatever I wanted. And yes, that did mean pajamas about 4 days a week. (Don't judge. We've all been there).
Ironically enough, last year I left the consulting world to work in-house as Head of Marketing for a fashion startup! I must say, it's been a pretty steep learning curve for me. But it's been my first time devoting all my Moz wisdom to one brand, and that experience feels great.
I've always admired Rand for his work in the marketing world. He's created the community where so many of us have learned and thrived in serving our clients. And, he's been progressively looking better while doing it.
Now, Rand branches into the world of fashion advice - I love it! Not only helping us do better marketing, but helping us look better while doing it.
Cheers Rand, keep it coming!
Enjoyable and nice change of pace! All of those thumbs down are from guys who still want to tuck their t-shirt into their pants with no belt on ;)
I feel like the moustache requires it's own Whiteboard Friday. Men everywhere need to know!
Totally agree with you :D
Really.. I think it will be so much different & funny as well..
Otherwise lots of people enjoy this White board Friday.. :)
Using a t-shirt as underwear is cloaking fashion :D
omg than I am cloacking since years ?????? no no no ....
Rand -
Bravo on mixing it up and giving this community of optimizers something *different* to optimize. In all seriousness, one of the major personality traits we look for in new hires is the 'fixit' / optimizer quality in all aspects of life. People who are life hackers or who have attention to details in improving life's smaller things (or who are weirdly passionate about specific details in life) tend to be great SEOs / Inbound marketers.
Living in Tel Aviv, there is virtually no attention to men's fashion - shorts, teeshirts, and sandals is the dress code of the most successful startups here. BUT - I'm starting to see things changing for the better..well fitting slacks, collard shirts, etc.
Question / Comment --> Do you really think the 'tuck' is passé? Totally agree on tee-shirts. But what about collared shirts? Rocking some nice light colored slacks with a tucked in collared shirt can look fresh. Tucked out collared shirts with the wrong tailored fit can look sloppy and boxey... just 'not put together' in my eyes. It obviously depends on the shirt, the person, and the context of course.
Anyways, Thanks. I personally learned at least a few new things in this video.. the undershirt / underwear point is huge. Thanks for having a bit of fun, and showing how people who like to optimize are also into improving other parts of life :)
I think if you're wearing a full suit, you absolutely must tuck in the shirt. But for most of the non-suit looks, I'm not a fan of tucking. I know guys who can pull it off, but I'm not one of them :-)
Lost it at "Blackhat bowtie" lol
I found that pretty funny as well.
Rand that was really great, really enjoyed this today - good fun.
You would have blended just great in Edinburgh, Scotland this week in your suit. I work next door to Holyrood Palace and the Queen was having her annual Garden Party. Every one came in their best dapper suits, 3 pieces etc.
PS next time you do this, go for the full Scottish dress outfit, KILT and everything, now there's a challenge for you. You mentioned to me once you have Irish heritage, so hey maybe there is a Irish tartan out there.
Good fun today but you got me starring at my $200 CAT boots, now are they acceptable for marketers?
Oh! and Happy 4th of July to you folks! - Bit bizarre coming from a Brit I guess. I may be wrong (please correct me if I am) but sure Paul Revere who warned the Colonial Militia that the 'British are coming, the British are coming!' was in the sights of a Scottish soldier who could not take it upon himself to shoot a man in the back. How things could have been soooo different.
But yes have a great day!
Best
David
Not sure how I'd look in a kilt, but I'm definitely game to try it!
Go for it! - You'll need to be a True Scot though when wearing one you know!
Rand, you fashion-guru you,
10 points on this men's fashion cat-walk caper:
1) www.mozapparel.com is available. You owe it to EVERY Mozzer (worldwide) to a) buy this domain and b) blog - I'm sure Geraldine can provide some tips. Hell, make it a travel-fashion blog!
2) Why not take on Calvin Klein and introduce the www.RandsCollection.com range? Yep, that's available too!
3) Loved the idea of wearing under-tees to save on washing..
4) Just how big is your (walk-in?) wardrobe? "Guess the # of items in Rand's closet" as a future Moz compo?
5) Polka-dot socks? Dude, that requires a virtual hi5 :)
6) "Wrongly worn neck ties" - YES! So many wear them wrong. Thanks for finally setting the record straight. 2nd hi5..
7) Thank goodness you didn't go down this route - that may have caused Moz Pro to stop working altogether..
8) "Don't tuck in your t-shirt" - YES! 3rd hi5..
9) Will there be a "5 Fashion Hacks for the Modern Female Marketer - Whiteboard Friday" too? surely? SURELY?
10) Will there be a "5 Fashion Hacks for the Modern Male Marketer (who's nearly 45) - Whiteboard Friday" - that one applies to me and all the other seasoned (ahem) marketers out there ;-)
Disclaimer: all the above to be taken firmly tongue-in-cheek XD
An education in geek chic! love it Rand!
Awesome...One of the most organized and optimized post...ooops "Optimized Rand"
RAND IN A SUIT. YES.
Hey Rand, i never comment on your video's. But now i do... i loved it. Could not see your purple socks? You where of screen.
Of course all the seo guys want to have an double windsor now, so i checked youtube. And the winner is with 20 million views: https://bit.ly/VmOWyR
Yeah - I'm going to have to put those on today and take a photo to share here.
Rand's got swag for days. Take notes my fellow geeklings
Ha! entertaining topic, good to see a kind of behind the scene rand's outfits! :)
Well done Rand! I am still wondering how you got a kids belt around your waist! lol
"Wes, would you repair that mistake"
LOL!!
Hey Rand,
Happy Fourth of July!
Just wanted to say thanks for giving me a Whiteboard Friday this week that was pure enjoyment.
It's been a pretty heavy week with lots of extra stuff to cram in as time to leave for Seattle and #Mozcon is fast closing in. This was just the 10 minutes of joy I needed in my day :)
You took me back to some very special times I spent with my Grandad when I was just a little girl starting school and had to learn to tie the full Windsor to meet uniform standards at my school...lol...and the hours I spent years later as I taught my little brother to tie the magic knot under Grandad's supervision. Such lovely memories.
So good to be reminded that there is so much more to life than work.
See you in a little over a week :)
Also, those shoes are gorgeous!
Sha
With your interest in fashion I think you'd love to move Moz to Shoreditch, London, Rand!
lol, you should be a stand up comedian. Comedy Friday ;)
The return of the bow tie :) I can see that working for me, there's even a Pinterest page for that (not mine just googled it for fun) https://uk.pinterest.com/mm2300/the-return-of-the-bow-tie/
Rand This is an Awesome WhiteBorad Friday.. I loved the Video but Cant able see your Shoes that You showed on Point 4.. Please Show us the Same Color Socks and Shoes you were talking about ? Thanks
Whoops! The video embed was showing the almost-finished version. Updated. You should see his feet at all the appropriate moments now. sorry about that!
Perfect piece of content. Inbound at it's heart with awesome link bait and such a cool factor!
GG Rand ! (and whoever got this idea :) )
What, no facial hair hacks? Disappointment!
Best hack I know: want facial hair? Stop shaving! :-)
Doesn't work for me :/
The 24 people who disliked this post take life way too seriously. If you're the type of person who thinks everything should be routine and expected 100% of the time, then you're in the wrong industry
I love Frideay!! Gooo!! ;)
Whoww!!
Well actually this is the only word that came in my mind after watching this Fashionable, High Class & Branded WBF by you. :) It's just awesome..
You covered every aspect of Modern Fashion but you forgot the Hair!! How could you do that? :) Btw, I just loved your tips and now I would request you to launch your own Fashion Blog.. :)
I wish if the camera person could focus on the lower details that you were showing more precisely :P
Yeah - sorry about that. I think we didn't realize where the camera was vertically cutting off.
It's alright. The camera person did a fantastic job when you're talking about the Shoes tip. Thumbs up :)
Hey Umar. The video embed didn't display the most recent version of the video. It's been updated to show the finished version, sorry about that!
BTW - Elijah, great work on the editing! You made this video way better than it would have otherwise been :-)
I've always found that my somewhat ridiculous haircut which can only be described as a throwback to mid naughties alternative music has worked quite effectively as a tool for standing out. Almost to a point of people recognising the haircut before me. Works well at conferences etc. Downside is I can't get rid of the thing....
There's certainly worse looks than that of a session musician ¬!

Just in time for MozCon!
A very fascinating video and title for an article. Fashion hacks for the modern male marketer? Well, this is quite interesting! I am so thrilled with the hack that states: "Unintentionally, my underwear has become outerwear.I just find this, well, not optimized."
What's the word on a dress shirt with no undershirt? I switched over to this and it's so much more comfortable in my opinion, especially in the summer months. Might try the V-neck idea so that I don't have to wash dress shirts so often, although it would have to be a really light V.
Perfect piece of content
Love it!
That's a nice twist on Whiteboard Friday videos.
You made me think about how I look like when I talk with my clients and business partners.
Thank you for the video.
Just one note here. You say: "Another fantastic thing about having an open collared shirt and wearing an undershirt, like a V-neck underneath it, is when I get home, I don't actually need to wash this. I can just put it right back on my hanger in my closet, and then I throw the undershirt in the wash" - the collar of the shirt still gets dirty. There is a daily duty in Russian army to sew in a new white collar to the uniform every day. Here is how they do it:
sewing in a new white collar (in Russian)
Funny post ! The instructive aspect is still present though.
lol completely un related post but its good to shake things up!
i agree with not tucking in a t-shirt but whats wrong with tucking in a shirt??? i always do it, a lot of people do it, it actually looks better imo! and whats wrong with a clip on BOW tie? most people do not know how to do a bow tie anyway.. ties are easy but a bow tie is a completely different ball game. and nobody will even care if your bow tie is a clip in or not. got to get rid of that moustache by the way if you going to talk fashion lol.. or maybe going for the indie/hip look? =)
in other news: matt cutts is going on holiday... (meh) the past week has has been short on good topics :(
Moz.com now needs another fashion section on it, and Rand (The SEO cum fashion guy) will run it. ;)
I love this - we all should also get more tips on all the things around and not always "just SEO". Hope, others will foloow! Thanks, Rand
Its funny how you got the optimisation part in the equation!
Good post indeed!
The topic was interesting. I believe that fashion statement matters a lot in business, since being presentable is required to show good character as a marketer.
Thanks for this helpful content!
Great! This is indeed an interesting content.
The video was brief enough and was simple and informative as well.
I like how you've discussed the topic, Rand. You've said it wisely and clearly!
It's quite intriguing, as for me, to know the fashion hacks of the modern male marketers. Well, I believe that dressing up matters a lot, especially in business because you should always be presentable in front of many people.
The way how you dress also shows what kind of person you are. So I think it is just fair if you could also give valuable time to assess your fashion statement.
Thanks for the post! :)

Ich hatte eine gute Lektüre, ich freue mich auf mehr
Great post! Don't forget to hide your chest hair in the office though... comb it.. gel it... whatever you have to do to make sure no little visitors pop out while we're discussing projects. It's weird! And gives me a creepy feeling.
Well this was pure refreshment. I am forced to remember the refreshment we got , when we had a break during play, basically i was a volleyball player..to be precise a good volleyball player. It was something exciting apart from SEO and the links you have given as a reference, might be getting good traffic ;).
One thing, i was expecting , you would have chatted a little about the hairstyles and phenomenal mustaches, you have kept. This basically reminds me of one of most famous revolutionary and a great patriot in our country's history.
The Handlebar 'Stache' of Bhagat Singh
If you all can have a look at this link :
https://www.gqindia.com/content/revolutionaries-guide-facial-hair
I am sure you will get to know whom i am talking about.
Everything apart, you rock Rand..Cheers..!!
Well we did get to see your boxer shorts, grey with white poker dots I think, when you showed us your belt - LOL.
Will you be doing one for the ladies; although the Brits dress differently to you guys in the US.
how do I disavow people I see tucking in their t-shirt or wearing dress shoes with jeans? Google Penalty X Infinity!!
Kudos on a fun and yet very informative post. I dig the Happy Socks, though I usually don't have shoes to match the sock choices. It's often fun to cross my legs in a meeting and see the person across from me notice I've got my details on point.
As for the neck ties, I'd like to submit the Pratt-Shelby. I have a thicker neck and longer torso that average, and find that this knot gives a very symmetrical knot without using nearly as much tie as a Half or Full Windsor.
Hey Thanks @Rand...It is surprising for me to see an article on men's fashion on @moz...Webmasters are now into the fashion world...this great whiteboard friday blog really gave an idea about fashion dressing style...I love to dress up a formal wear with a tie on neck in formal events..Thanks :)
I really think you have misinterpreted the holidays. It's 4th of July, not the first of April! :)
Btw I think as a marketer I apparently just turned blackhat as one of my really nice bow-ties is well blackhat :/
Ha, thanks Moz. Great to see a fun Friday! I shall never fall to outer under wear again!
Oh Man.. I love it, I Just love it Rand... Your Fashion sense really S***, but this white board Friday totally change my perspective. Fashion Diva's will definitely gonna ping after watching this video.
Just watched this with the office and sadly it has left one or two of our female colleges disappointed - For all the talk of details what - happened to showing them your polkadot sox!
I'll take a photo today and share it in the comments :-)
not sure how it relates to marketing but it's Rand so you cut him some slack. I have always noticed how he dresses differently than the average marketer now I know why..
Now it's time for a serious comment....
First of all did I miss something? Is this post in a way related to the 4th of July celebration? I am not an American so I am just wundering.
On the fashion sense well it's of course personal and cultural. For example the white shirt mention. I do that too, but in my opinion the white shirt is not underwear in the Netherlands or I do not see it like that. And more to the point what difference does it make in "the name" of things if the "underwear" is white and or grey and have a v-neck? It's still underwear by definition. I am not talking about fashion mix-match, the grey one looked beter in my opnion. But in the Netherlands I think a lot of guys wearing white shirt (or my mind wants it too) and of course it is possible we Dutchies have no fashion sense whatsoever, we are cheap bastards after all...But generally I think Ameriican fashion sence is behind the Dutch one, t-shirts in once pants was done in America for far to long...bbrrr.
Another funny fact / notice are the tie's and bottoming up your shirt to the top. As far as I noticed, in the Netherlands, this is not the trend anymore for a long time. Even on formal affairs, some flesh is not bad. Of course there are some people who do it, but generally it's the older generation. And for my feeling is a bit up tide. Even the father of our current king cut his tie, because it was to constricting and should be stopped.
All in all a very funny White Board Friday. But you Amies still have no fashion sence to speak off (sarcasme), come on black socks over white socks even when not seen... bad Rand...(it would make me crazy lol)
Rand explains more in his comment at
https://moz.com/blog/5-fashion-hacks-for-the-modern-male-marketer-whiteboard-friday#comment-291591
Thank you for breaking the convention! I really love to see companies taking the edge off things and having a bit of fun. Great tip about breaking in the socks, I will definately try that out...
I loved it Rand! I am glad that men in marketing talks so great about #fashion! Cool content Rand! Like it! :)
Hey Rand this is super cool :) hopefully will educate a lot of guys around! Thanks for the fun episode
I think I have a great belt but I always hatet tucked in shirts ... so you cant often see it - really funny WBF ;)
I LOLed. I regularly break the undershirt rule because I like how undershirts look with just the top button undone. Used to be a fashion faux pas, but now it's an SEO faux pas as well :)
Making the world a better place through undershirt optimization!
Nice, also another way to look at it, is that by dressing up a little you are opened up to more possibilities. By dressing up you provide a outlet of conversation and possibility of meeting someone. They could just say "hey, I like your shoe." and maybe he is the president of some big firm that you are trying to sign. A way in! Just saying. People are more opened to talk to someone that might be dressed with a little class.
A good funny video.I must say Rand do lot of shopping exclusively for this video.:)Great job!!!!
Awseome video! Thank you so much! Btw, which are those shoes that you're wearing? Thank you.
Like this post? Love it!
Rand is clearly rockin’ the house this weekend. Here is a man that clearly knows how to optimise. I always get excited at the thought of seeing what Rand will wear each Whiteboard Friday, and now – we finally get a chance to talk about it. Even as a female I'm wondering how I've lived my life not knowing how to turn my cuffs inside out halfway up my arms. Winner.
That Rand, he’s quite the man.
Let's look at the positives. I already see new comments from people who never commented before on your site. I bet your social shares and comments are high for this post. The metrics would be interesting to observe for this post.
Good point! Maybe I can just think of this as an experiment :-)
Hi @randfish, long time follower and first time commenter. Mixed filling about this post if I’m honest so I had to jump in and ask the question that some of us might have been thinking about but didn’t dare asking. Was this post in any way SEO related? Aiming to throw us into another deep wonder of metaphorical suggestions, Or was it a pure take on dressing codes basics one on one… I’m asking because it does seems to have some SEO logic (as weird as it might sound…)
It was meant purely as some fun - no relationship to SEO or marketing at all. I promise the next 50 weeks in a row of Whiteboard Fridays will be on-topic (just like the last few hundred weeks) :-)
Great content Rand! You have shown immense courage putting something like this here ;)
The inner wear and tie knot tips were really great. I am not sure about the socks stuff, as in many countries it is considered unprofessional to wear socks like that one. It is a good practice to read about the dressing styles in countries before one travels . It is as important as knowing the email styles suitable for different countries when pitching a sale.
Thanks.
Haha very funny.
I live in Rio de Janeiro and I really love the "fashion" here. I wear usually flip-flops and bermudas :D If it's something important I'll put my puma shoes and that's it. Really refreshing to be not focused on fashion and what anybody could say about my outfit...
omg, i can't join it
thank sir for sharing wonderful piece of knowledge with us..
It Will Really help me alots
@rand
Innovation is the key to marketing! And you have put all your innovations in a single post! Great!
what just happened?
How to look like a hipster to blend into Portland, Austin, San Francisco, and NYC. - Rand Fishkin (Hipster SEO Elite)
Heheh ...
This is ridiculous.
Yes it is! That was kinda the point :-)
Rand are you switching over to the fashion industry? We wait all week to hear your expertise on marketing, not fashion design. I did get a lesson from this. If you are looked at as an authority in a particular industry, give your followers what they want to hear about, and stick to what your an expert at. Once you get off topic people will lose interest.
I'm still a huge fan of yours Rand. And I will continue being a member and coming to your Whiteboard Fridays.
However, I want to make a point. I think we are in a brand new evolution for Online Marketing and SEO. We are on a leveled playing field where the cheaters and tricks are out of the game, and the true talent and hard work can finally shine. However I honestly think that some if the newbies to SEO will listen to this video and think to themselves "is SEO dead?"
I know, I need to relax and have some fun, two things I never seem to do. Lol
OK I have to get on my soap-box & address the few people that have missed the point!
While I appreciate the community’s serious commitment to SEO and obvious dedication to these posts, perhaps some people could lighten up? What I love about Rand is that he makes the whole industry so exciting, hip and fun. He’s got a great personality and his enthusiasm is so infectious.
Okay, this video is off-topic, but wasn't it 4th July? Wasn't Matt Cutts on holiday? Have some people not missed the point? Surely as SEO's and marketers our aim is to make things interesting, readable, shareable… Incidentaly, @goldenfs if someone looks at one post and gets confused, they probably aren't up to the job.
Do you know how many people I’ve told about a Moz video I watched - where Rand was so excited about his topic, he was literally jumping in the air as he talked (a series of mini jumps, actually - and I found myself laughing hysterically and high-fiving the screen while I was watching!) Rand offers a wonderful gift in that his creativity and personality potentially draws other creative types into the profession, that perhaps would not ordinarily have found their way in, despite (I believe) these types make good SEOs. Personality, lateral thinking, creativity, spark - never go astray in the online world.
Dry propeller-heads do not maketh interesting websites.
Heck, he offers so much fantastically useful information, he can afford to mess around a little. And I certainly have no objections to seeing his ADORABLE wife appear in a bunny suit in a previous video…
Fun and intelligent information shouldn't be mutually exclusive. I'm sad that Rand thinks he has to promise to be straight for the next 50 weeks in a row. Rock on, Rand. Please, please continue to be your fabulous self!
