SEO is easy. Graphic Design is hard.
At SEOmoz we take pride in making SEO tools that shine with beauty, often with great success. To be fair, we haven't always hit the mark. You can’t judge a book by its cover. Some of the best SEO tools ever invented exist on a geek's homemade Google Docs spreadsheet pulling in raw API data.
We love ugly SEO tools. They’re practical and more often than not, made by a single developer. Let's spread the love by appreciating those under-designed tools that are actually awesome.
1. Shared Count
Why it Rocks - Introduced to us by Tom Critchlow, Shared Count has a permanent place on my bookmarks bar. Not only does it track the social sharing statistics of any page you desire, including Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+ and raw Twitter counts. In addition, Shared Count has an open API, so you can build your own tools on top of it.
Why it’s Ugly - It’s hard to pick on a tool with absolutely no design whatsoever. Sort of like kicking a dog when it’s down.
2. IETester
Why it Rocks - Whenever you check cross browser compatibility, 9 times out of 10 Internet Explorer throws you for a loop. IETester is a free, downloadable web browser that allows you to render different versions of IE in side-by-side windows and check for errors. There’s also a cool debugging option to root out tough-to-find problems.
Why it’s Ugly - Nothing looks good in IE6, not even IE6.
3. Blogscape
Why it Rocks - The hidden gem of the SEOmoz toolset, Blogscape allows you to monitor the popularity of any keyword, brand or url on a daily basis. Simply enter a term or domain and see a list of all mentions of that phrase taken from a list of 1000s of RSS feeds and more.
In addition, advanced query operators allow you to track only posts containing a link to a specific domain – great for tracking new link discovery. We use it in-house at SEOmoz weekly to help measure the success of our SEO efforts.
Why it’s Ugly
The above screenshot doesn't look bad, but every time the neon green wolf logo loads in a browser, Roger MozBot blows a circuit. (This is a PRO tool. If you’re not a PRO member, the login page is even uglier.)
4. URI Valet
Why It Rocks - URI Valet combines over 10 structural tools in one to perform technical audits, site reviews and more. You can see behind the scenes of any web page by checking server headers, text to HTML ratio, download speed, object details and quick links to W3C Validators. One of my favorite features not only lists all the internal and external links on a page, but validates them as well.
Why It’s Ugly - Who says you need a graphic designer to make a web-based tool? Or a color pallet, for that matter.
5-6. Robots.txt Checkers
https://tool.motoricerca.info/robots-checker.phtml
https://www.frobee.com/robots-txt-check
Why They Rock - I couldn’t decide which of these tools I liked more - it’s good to bookmark them both. When I worked on the help team at SEOmoz, these tools were essential for finding hidden problems with robots.txt files, even when no error was visible. They even account for hidden code in your files that can trip up your average search spider. I guarantee at least 1 out of 5 readers will discover robots.txt errors they never knew existed.
Why They’re Ugly - We know robots.txt files are boring (exceptions excluded) but does your user interface have to be too?
7. Wayback Machine
Why it Rocks - The Wayback Machine has a giant archive of website pages going back 15 years. If you want to research older links that may have disappeared or track website modifications that resulted in traffic changes, the Wayback machine lets you peer into the past, sometimes with dramatic results. It’s hard to believe this is what SEOmoz looked like just 2 years ago.
Some grey hat SEOs buy expired domains, then reconstruct the previously existing website page-by-page from the Machine’s archives. By doing so they hope to preserve the allusion of continuity to Google. (In my opinion, the jury’s still out.)
Why it’s Ugly - It’s cool to see what your favorite website looked like in 1996, but what's up with that 1996 logo? Still in Beta... seriously?
8. SEO Browser
Why it Rocks - Quickly see all of a webpage’s important SEO structure in one view, starting with the title tag and working your way down. Does the page have a robots.txt file? How about analytics installed? Often I use the SEO Toolbar for a quick look at page structure information, but the SEO Browser is an old favorite and great when I want to see the entire text copy laid out on a single, readable page.
Why it’s Ugly - Their tagline is “See your website like a Search Engine sees it.” Unfortunately, most search engines have the design aesthetics of a color-blind CSV file.
9. Rank Checker
Why it Rocks - Sometimes you want to check a bunch of rankings…. fast. The Rank Checker from SEObook runs on your browser so you don’t have to wait for a third party to check your rankings for you. Beware, because it runs on your browser it’s much harder to control for the effects of localization and other mitigating factors, but it’s still handy when speed is more important than absolute accuracy.
Why it’s Ugly - It’s not that ugly. But it is quick and dirty.
10. Xenu’s Link Sleuth
Why it Rocks - While Screaming Frog is winning over the hearts and minds of many SEOs, Xenu’s Link Sleuth takes the award as the original ugly SEO tool that rocks. Most think of it as a link checker that runs on your desktop, but its dead simple interface and easy-to-understand reporting makes it a must have when running quick site audits. It’s also brilliant when mining for link opportunities.
Why it’s Ugly - After performing a Google search for Xenu, the first thing you do is hit the "back" button to double check your results. Quite possibly the worst landing page in the history of SEO tools, you swear you've arrived on a broken site from 1992. Trust us, it's okay.
The alien has landed.
Couldn't agree more on the xenu website, haha. The URL also looks rather suspicious.
What really sucks is that some antivirus checkers will trigger an alert when they discover a copy of link slueth on your computer...even though the software is clean and harmless.
The rumor is that scientologists will do anything to stop the link slueth. LOL.
Ah, but lovable despite their aesthetic challenges!
Thanks for this post Cyrus, a few good ones there that I had not yet stumbled across!
I have to say that Wayback is a good friend when faced with a client who has had all or part of a site accidentally deleted or edited into oblivion!
Our company has picked up a number of clients in this situation and the good ol' Wayback Machine has proven invaluable for two things:
Our most recent rebuild from a site that had been virtually obliterated identified a list of URL's that no longer existed. Within a few days of adding 301's for these pages, traffic on the destroyed site increased by more than 1000 percent!
Thanks for the new toys, time to play!
Sha, these are great, practical tips. For most users, I'd also recommend researching those lost URL's though Open Site Explorer or the Mozbar to discover top pages worth saving.
Thanks for sharing!
Ah yes, I should have said that Wayback is usually the backup play...when a site has been hammered so badly that it is gone in the eyes of the world.
Mostly for those times when Open Site Explorer apologetically reports PA 1, DA 1, No Data Available for this URL.
In this recent case, a 9 year old site with almost 100 pages of content had been "redesigned" to 9 existing pages, only one of which was indexed, but it's now clear that many of the old pages were either still live in search engines, or linked to from other sites. :)
Great list. Love Sharedcount...just made an even uglier script that pings it with multiple URLs and gives up a CSV about a month ago.
Love Xenu even though it hasn't given me Level 5 Scientology powers yet (although Screaming Frog has replaced it for me) used to love rank checker but lately it just hasn't worked for me. Maybe there's a new version?
I love Blogscape too, it's so slept on...actually that can be said for most of the stuff in mozLabs.
I think Majestic belongs in this category too. Love the tool, it's just....not photogenic.
-Mike
Thanks Michael - and welcome aboard as SEOmoz's newest associate!
Oh wow!
That's a nice shiny new badge you have there!
Congrats!
Mike... you Associate?!!!! My compliments dude!
Thanks guys!
Happy to be onboard and itching to start sharing some more stuff!
-Mike
WOW Cyrus! It seems like you give away almost everything amazing you got with you!
I read the title today and thought ‘What?’ but I was quite sure the SEOmoz cant come up with the simple tool list and by the time I end up the post I said ‘What a post!’…
The Journey from ‘What’ to ‘What a Post' was amazing…
There are few tools that includes ‘Blogscape’, ‘Way Back Machine’ and ‘SEO-Browser’ sounds awesome and I never hared of these tools ever before…
And yes so true about ‘Xenu’ ;)
Thank you Cyrus for making the day!
Really great post! I love your new SEO tools, especially the URI Valet and SEO Browser tools. Great for analyzing on-site metrics! I think Xenu takes the cake on ugly but amazing tools, been using that one for a while now and it really is great.
Always gret to have a list of tools that have been recommended by a reliable souce!
How hard is it to implement target="_blank" on this website?
Take a look on Netpeak Checker (free software), could be very usefull in many situations, especially in competition analysis.
+1 for this software ("Opredelyaika"). Using this soft very often. Recommended!
The URI Valet is just what I've been looking for!
You've been keeping things from me Cyrus!
Ha... I learned about so many of these tools while on the Help team, of course. :)
Great post Cyrus.
Witty, informative and very helpful.
As a newbie member (often reader who has finally decided to register) I look forward to discovering more great little gems like this.
Many thanks & by the way, hello to all.
Hey Kevin,
Nice to meet you :)
It's tricky, because sometimes pretty is the goal, and other times you just want to get the facts out... and with that, you want the page to load and run super fast, especially if you are serving the community with a strong tool (you're going to have a lot of traffic). I've defintely been on both sides of this.
Besides, current web-design is returning to minimalist design after the web 2.0 blowout, so maybe these designs will just be 'retro shiek' soon.
Screaming Frog SEO Spider Tool should definitely be added to your list. It's pretty similar to XENU as a link checker, but you can also get deeper into available informations for each URL of your site, like:
H1, h2, Meta Description, Meta Keywords, etc.
The free version is limited to 500 URLs checked.
Hope this helps!
He did mention it when he mentioned Xenu.
Screaming Frog is not ugly though...well aside from the part of the UX that is ugly in every app written in Java (bold System font yuck).
I beta test the software and the features just keep getting more amazing.
Cheers dude.
Will have to send you over a new version fairly soon with throttle/crawl speed control and a xml sitemap feature (finally...!).
How about the ability to filter within each tab? You can filter now but only for certain types and I'd like to search for certain text within the results.
Just export to CSV and tear through it in Excel.
There's a great Screaming Frog post on Distilled about that
Does the search function (box on the right) not do the job?
If not, Excel is the next best method (as Mike mentioned).
Cheers.
Ha...I was on 1.40 but just upgraded to 1.70...that works. Thanks!
I've been using ScreamingFrog for a few months now and love it. Glad to hear you guys are adding crawl throttling and XML sitemap creation. Looking forward to the new features rolling out.
I personally use Screaming frog but i dont think it should be added in the list as Screaming Frog SEO Spider Tool is not ugly looking at all!... it contains a good design actually!
Who called me ugly?! ;-)
To be honest, we focused very heavily on usability and hence a simple, logical UI design and interface to go with it.
It could be a bit more pretty :-)
Absolutely useful tools! I didn't knew the URI Valet and I like it!!
Way back in 2005 I grabbed an exe.file called "The Tattler" - I can't remember where I got that and if I google it I find nothing about that. The tool looks ugly too, but is great! It scrapes me lots of backlinks. Sorry I can't provide a link to it.
This seems to be the old link to the plugin: https://www.webguerrilla.com/down-loads/tattler.zip
Unfortunately it has been taken down. Can you provide more info on this tool? What exactly do you use it for?
I use if for backlink research.
The tool- scrapes backlinks (intern + extern)- shows title of the page from the backlink- has an export function
Yeah it was a little tool built by Greg Boser (or Dax). He's changed his site now and you can't download it anymore unfortunately!
It used the Yahoo API and was a nice little backlink checker.
I've been using Rank Checker for a while and really love it.
Yep, that's an old favorite of mine too.
I've never gotten good results from the Rank Checker tool. I find this to be BY FAR the best rank checking tool: https://www.searchenginepeople.com/blog/how-to-automatically-track-your-google-positions-in-microsoft-excel.html
Yeah Rank Checker takes too long and concistently gives me inaccurate data (in free and paid versions). If it were accurate I could overlook the slow speed, since it's still faster than most rank checking tools.
I've found Rank Tracker to be my top choice. Lightining fast, and not quite 100% accurate, but about 95% accurate and none of the innacuracies are ever off by more than a few spots.
[link removed]
Rank Checker tool always gives the correct rank, but difference is that it checks the ranking on 100 results per page and we check on 10 results per page of google. Thats why our ranking does not match with the Rank Checker tool.
Thanks
Birendra Singh
I'm not a fan - slow (or stalls), and the ranks have been off as much as 50% compared to a rank checker using logged-out local IPs or proxies.
I get better results with a Chrome plugin called SEO Serp.
Shared count is a new and cool tool! thanks for sharing. i was thinking of dozens of other SEO tools but almost forgot the word "ugly"! anyways my fav site audit tool is woorank - not ugly though
How about this ugly tools https://www.design-sites.ru/en/utility/link-analyzer.php - it can calculate the internal page rank and can use the backlinks data
I already love RankChecker, IE Tools, and SharedCount. I'll have to check out the other ones. Great post!!
Shared Count has an awesome design. Great minimalism.
I think the value of IETester is really underestimated and underappreciated. When looking at website analytics you can really see such a large variety of browsers being used and there are quite a lot of visitors who may not get the full intended user experience due to something as little as incompatibilities with their browser and your site.
That is truely one ugly seo tool that rocks!
Great post, absolutely agree tons of ugly tools that rock! Nice.
Rex Swain's HTTP viewer is pretty helpful, too. Not the most aesthetic, but provides some helpful information about redirects and http status codes. https://www.rexswain.com/httpview.html
Great post, although I would disagree with you on RankChecker. For me it has always provided some interesting and not very accurate results. Better off going manual!
Can't believe G Site Crawler never made it on here as it is by far one of the best ugliest SEO tools I have ever seen. Great list by the way. Was actually looking for Link Sleuth the other day and could not remember the name of it!
Thanks for putting together this list. I use a number of them and am excited about testing the other tools mentioned (especially URI Valet)! Has anyone used https://www.sitemapdoc.com/serp-rank.aspx? I'm curious if the rankings reported with this tool are accurate/consistent.
Good call on the first Robot.txt checker. ran two of my sites through the first one, and it caught some pretty simple errors that other tools didn't pick up on.
Wayback Machine is my guilty pleasure tool. I've always been fascinated with the evolution (or devolution) sites.
Xenu was the first tool to come to mind before clicking on the title. We already utilize several of these tools, and it's always good to pick up a few new favorites. We'll likely make good use of the robots.txt checkers and IE testers. We've written a similar list of free SEO tools for the DIY types out there.
Rank checker great when it works! However can miss Bing / Yahoo out completely at times and rank often lower than it actually is, when manually test on public machines, undiluted by personal search...
Hello.. A bespoke Blog ! Great Post..
I almost love the Rank Checker tool and the Parameter Tool they are helping me a lot.
Thanks for putting this up!!
[link removed]
Great Post Cyrus, Bookmarked all of them.
Good list of tools. Thanks for sharing! BTW, here is one of the newest tools that I'm really enjoying. It's a duplicate content checker and gives you measurements on how much related content is on two pages. You can easily put in two different urls and it will show up much they are similar in percentage.
https://www.duplicatecontent.net/
Nice article.I never used any of the tools you have mentioned in the article except rank checker. But i don't find it that much useful as its showing me different results compared to when i am directly searching on google for the specific keyword.
Nice list. Didn't knew a lot of them. A lot new for me, and usefull.
Rank checker from seo book is really a good tool to find a ranking for bunch of keywords at a time. Its not bad at all.........
This is a really inspiring collection for all, I like it, thanks for shearing!
Great post,it's very useful for SEOers. Thanks your sharing.
nice list, I especially like your humorous comments
"Seo site tools" chrome extension can do same as Shared Count with one mouse click.
Majestic SEO and yahoo explorer free and usefull for monitoring inbound links.
Wayback Machine and Xenu’s Link Sleuth very usefull for intercepting old domians.
Great post , wayback machine is very good .
seoauditr.com goes straight in the 'ugly SEO tools that rock' category :)
hi! Cyrus Shepard you are really rock... great stuff with cool info...
not only ugly but deadist list of tools.
And five years old, which accounts for some of the dead links.
Given how much the internet and social networks have changed in the past 5-10 years it's amazing to see the shelf life of some of these free SEO / marketing tools. Maybe WayBack Machine will outlast us all.
I randomly ran across this old post today and was amazed at how many of these tools are still very useful for SEO today even though the SEO landscape has changed so much since it was published.
Thanks for the list, I've all bookmarked them except for the Windows one... but if I find a pc somewhere in some garbage it will be the first app I'll install. ;)
Up until a few weeks ago, I'd have added "compete.com" into this list -- but their recent update is very appealing...
I found "PaRaMeter" to be a great desktop tool for rank checking, its damn ugly but it will check your whole site in less than a minute - set it to do multiple sites it will take longer but its cool ... if rather well...ugly
Great post. At the end of the day, we need these tools to do our job, not too look pretty for us while we use them. The only difference is if the UX is confusing - that's when a cleaner, tidier version may be superior and more welcome. But hey, if they tell us what we need to know then good enough in my opinion.
Great set indeed. Thanks for sharing!
Great set of tools, previously I did not know about SharedCount - very useful.
SharedCount is great! I'm amazed that I haven't seen something so simple and useful being more ubiquitous in web form.
Aw I can't believe SEOJack.com's Onpage SEO Evaluator is not on this list! That thing finds errors, all outbound links and ther follow/nofollow status, images/altags, keyword usage, etc.
It's pretty ugly too!
https://www.seojack.com/onpage-seo-tool/
Awesome list of ugly SEO tools. If you haven't yet, I'd really love to see a top 10 aggregated ugly + pretty SEO tools.
Thank you so much for your great post and for everybodies feedback on these tools. I am just starting out so they will be a huge help for me with growing my online home based business.
Thanks again!
Wayback machine sounds interesting! It must be recommended to those that are doing logical research because some of them might need something from their past references that were not bookmarked in their toolbar.
This is great list of SEO tools. Thanks for Sharing. I use GTmetrix for on page optimization. https://www.gtmetrix.com/
I have been using GetMySite.info to generate report. It's still in Beta and slower than other tools but I have been addictive for this tool.
Thanks for this great post ... I will put SEO Browser and Rank Checker in my favorites
Great tool list. XENU ist one more for the list.
hi,
this is really a nice tools... i have been in use of wayback machines, rank checker apart from that is new for me so its really helpful to me & will be useful definitely....
I like this post, but I think it would be also useful if at the end, there was "one" tool that could combine all the others showed before.
Kind regards.
Nice tool set, personally I like the Hupspot's website grader which is free and quick data extractor.
Here are two more ugly, good websites: Craigspace and DrudgeReport.
I think that Screaming Frog is the ultimate tool to help you out... Let's not forget Webmaster Tools as well :-)
All excellent tools, and shockingly the only one I didn't already have under my belt/bookmarked/use often is the Blogscape (and to think I'm a PRO member too, how shameful of me!)
Don't forget seedkeywords.com for a bit of soclai keyword discovery :)
d
Wonderful SEO tools you shared Cyrus. There are many tools are avalible in the current market but it is vital to use perfect SEO tools which provides you the best results.
Your suggested tools are awesome and i have already start to used. Only blogscape is left because it requires promembership. Thanks Cyrus for providing this useful resources.
-Hiren
Can a desktop software qualify for the "ugly" group? DCFinder is not a design showcase but it does the job pretty nice. www.dcfinder.com
Shared Count is my top one in terms of usefulness/uglyness ratio.
I am using most for the tools. There are lots of tools on the web, sometime we really get confused which one good and which is not :)
Hi
Great tools but shared count not working well.Thanx
Sam
Works 100% for me. Unfortunately, you may have connection problems. Let us know if you gain access.
Very useful (and funny) post Cyrus...
My absolutely fault of skills in designs is what stops me from making public the few tools I've created to help my daily job (not great thing, more my first steps into coding).
Just one side note about Rank Checker by SEObook and the SEOmoz's Rank Tracker: why they show so different rankings for the same keywords sometimes?
Finally... the Way Back Machine is a great tool... but try to check it with its own tool: if you think it is hugly now, just imagine how it was just few months ago...
I suspect that's based on how the search URLs are requested and the agnosticity of those requests (or lack thereof). For example, here's how the Moz web app queries a ranking: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=dr+mccoy&gl=us&pws=0 Not totally sure if that matches exactly how other tools do it.
Really, the login page of Blogscape is really very UGLY. I tried Rank Checker it doesn' provide accurate rankings & Shared Count is OK. SEO-Browser is really good & Way Back Maching is not working. Overall a good post & loved the Title of the post. Cyrus you evoke laugh out of me by your UGLY comments.
Xenu is also noticeably odd for the banner adverts that appear when you use it, and the lack of any graphics in the results. Great tool though.
That's my morning sorted out. Away to try these (even the ones I already use) and see what i can see.
Thanks for sharing - SEO Broswer looks great will be checking that out later 8)
I love Wayback, it's like being in an internet timewarp, although Xenu takes you straight back to the 90s as well! Great post and some great tools, not tried URL valet
The usage strain that you will be putting these old ladys under at the moment!! I feel sorry for them these were great kept secrets until now, those servers wont be knowing what is hitting them lol Great blog!
hi, excellent resource. Thanks for sharing. i like seomoz site. They are regularly updating new SEO related sources. I am visiting everyday to learn new things.Great WORK!
Always start the morning here in the Netherlands with 30 minuts of reading industry blogs and really enjoyed reading this one! Never knew about URI Valet, love it. Thanks for sharing Cyrus!
Nice Review of the SEO tools! I use a number of them and am excited about researching the other tools mentioned!
+ 1 for sharing!
Thanks for this great post.
Without good references like this, some of these highly relevant tools will go unused by a lot of us, due to a perception of lack of credibility. (Which is further bolstered by the commenters here.)
Duane
Whoops. Wrong account. Xenu is awesome! I'm excited to try out IETester.
-Chas
Glad to see some love for IETester.. discovered that one awhile back and it's helped me root out many a design bug.
SharedCount is fun but I always find myself wishing it would give me numbers for all the URLs in a domain instead of just the specific URL entered.. but of course I know that's more difficult by orders of magnitude!
Haven't used Xenu yet, but after reading all these comments, sounds like it's time to jump on the bandwagon... or should I say, bandspaceship?
I would consider the similar page check both ugly and useful:
https://www.webconfs.com/similar-page-checker.php
but that's just me. Great list. and how can you not love <3 Xenu?
HitTail is in this category. It's a solid tool (real-time keyword suggestions based on your traffic), but the design is really showing it's age. (Disclosure: I own it and I'm working on a new design).
Wasn't very familiar with IE Tester. Thanks for the little description... I'll have to test it out.
Hi there, thanks for tis ticket. Well these tools really rock. It seems that wayy back machine is already integrated in alexa tool bar (on righ click). I am going to test rank checker extension for firefox, which seems to be really simple and efficient.
SEO is not easy.. SEO people competes with all over world, it sounds good but when implementation and targets come infront of you that time you know it how it is easy. Yeah, it's true that if you can use the tools though they look ugly, that time it can be said that it's easy now.
By the way, that Rank Checker shows error rankings most of times. I don’t prefer to west times with that.
Thank you. Now I know what I will do the next hours. Playing with the ugly tools! :-)
I have been using most of these tools for a while they are pretty good all of them, the funny thing is Archive.org use to have a even worse design around 1 year ago hehe =)
Xenu is also great have been using it for ages =)
Thanks for this post...always love the tools, both new and old. And I also agree with the comments about Xenu. Hope they never change it! :)
Thanks for the tips. Will definately being checking out some of the tools and seeing which work best! Xenu seems to be getting the thumbs up so will being looking at the link mining opportunities.
I giggled a bit at all the "Why it's ugly" comments. :)
Shared Count was probably my favorite ugly tool and now I've added Xenu to my list. Thanks, it's a new find for me!
Couple of great ones in here I didn't know about - thanks! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...if it helps me, it's beautiful! ;-)
This is most useful a few things I had not heard of but may find useful in the future.
The Xenu site is indeed probably the most misleading thing I have ever seen, I did indeed double check with my friend that it was indeed that site he meant back when I first used Xenu.
I'm so glad that you included Xenu in this list. Yeah, it's ugly, but I've long considered it to be one of the essential tools for an SEO to have.
Please do one about ten sexy looking tools that rock too.
Nice list you got here... :)
Funny that SEOs usually are not designers... I also heard that designers are usually pretty bad SEOs! :)
Gotta see an SEOsigner someday...! ;)
Agree with everyone else, Xenu was a bit of a surprise back in the day when I discovered it....!
We build our own free SEO analyse https://www.seolab.nl/seo-analyse/ tool, it scans about 20 items of your website On and Off page.
We hope you like it.
big fan of Xenu, always have been. great suggestions on the other 9!
Great little collection of tools, many of which I have previosuly used, but a couple of new toys for me. Unfortunately SEO Browser doesnt seem to work for me, keeps returning a blank white screen, across different browsers too.
I have used rank checker and very satisfied with its result but after updation of my browser, it aneble to download in my browser and in this article i relleting got some amazing information regardig Ugly SEO Tools and that tools are really helpful to every SEO,
I don't know who has give this post a thumbs down????? I think they need to think properly about it.
