Last night we rolled out our latest Linkscape index update (we call it "index13" internally). From a data perspective we've got a few things wrapped in here that might interest you guys:
- 53 billion urls (our biggest index to date)
- 500 billion links
- Everything crawled within the last two months
- We crawled every blog post pulled from Blogscape up until May 1
- We're now counting # of Root Domains linking to a Subdomain instead of Subdomains linking to a Subdomain
In this update we've focused on a small amount of growth, up-to-date fresh data, and including the fast moving web, which has traditionally been difficult to capture for us. So go check out some reports, links, and top pages.
In light of the recent discussion across the SEO world about revelations about nofollow, here are some stats on nofollow usage we've observed:
- nearly 15 billion links (~3% of all links) using the nofollow attribute
- over 11 billion of those were internal (73% of instances of nofollow)
I don't pretend to know what motivates these internal usage of nofollow, but this is certainly consistent with the hypothesis that nofollow is used extensively for internal architecture reasons. We're looking into this issue a great deal. Be sure to check out WBF this week :) This update calculates mozRank as Rand describes as the "old" way. We're working on changes to include the "new" behavior and when we get that out (in about a month) we'll include some notes about correlations and changes.
We've also been keeping a close eye on adoption of rel=canonical. Our data shows a low, but growing level of adoption. We've got just over 38 million instances. From our anecdotal view we've seen it used pretty successfully on a few large sites. But I know there's still a lot of skepticism about it in some cases, so your mileage may vary. Still, it's not hard to include, so it might be a worthwhile investment regardless.
Shortly after each index update we also update our list of the Top Domains and Top Pages on the web. So be sure to keep an eye out for that data being updated very soon. Another thing we've been doing since launch is saving Linkscape reports. So if you're looking for history of sites and pages you've run in the past, be sure to check those out.
In addition to the index update, some of you may have read about a new addition to our SEOmoz Labs offering, a Linkscape Visualization Tool, which we're very happy to make available to you. As usual, this is a prototype, providing some advanced functionality we hope to include in future versions of our products. In the meantime head over to Labs and check out what else we've got :)
The visualization tool itself provides a lot of neat features that make what we're trying to do with Linkscape much more intuitive:
What we've done is to lay several key factors onto a radar graph to illustrate the comparison between these two sites. Radar graphs are a bit fancy, but the idea is pretty neat: each leg represents a different dimension. For instance to the upper right we've illustrated that shopstyle.com beats revolveclothing.com on a pure external link count, but revolveclothing.com beats shopstyle.com in terms of domain diversity of those links. Overall these two sites are competitive with each other, but the larger shopstyle.com area suggests that shopstyle has a slight edge from a pure link profile perspective.
We've powered a few consulting gigs of our own with this kind of visualization and it makes a great way for clients to see visually how they stand against competition, how internal pages compare to a site's homepage, and where the greatest weaknesses between two pages lies. But we don't just visualize the data. We also provide the raw data in a table:
So far it seems like that "Overall Score" is pretty well correlated with ranking for sites with similar content. So we feel like this is a pretty good view of a page's link profile.
More importantly we've built some of our SEO experience and analysis into suggestions and next steps:
These suggestions are a good place to look if you want to know your biggest strengths and weaknesses. And we've got some contextual links to get some more information.
So try out the tool and the new index and let me know what you think!
What about unique internal nofollowed links? What I mean is, If a Contact Us link is on every page using nofollow it's pretty much the same.
This would give a good idea of actual sculpted pages.
Thank you. I love pretty pictures because it makes clients understand the issue quickly and they can easily understand the issues.
Nice break down Nick.
In the visual you mentioned that revolveclothing beats shopstyle in terms of the diversity of links, to a client the labels might be confusing because they don't clearly tell what you're looking at.
Maybe "ext links" could be "Total inbound links" and "domains linking" could be something like "diversity of inbound links" if I am understanding it correctly.
Then the explanation of the difference would be that shopstyle has a greater total number of inbound links. Revolveclothing has links coming from more different sources. Meaning, shopstyle has many instances of groups of inbound links coming from one url and although fewer in total numbers revolveclothing has one inbound link from a greater number of individual urls. (which should be more valuable on face value)
Am I interpreting you correctly?
"Meaning, shopstyle has many instances of groups of inbound links coming from one url and although fewer in total numbers revolveclothing has one inbound link from a greater number of individual urls. (which should be more valuable on face value)"
one url = the same domains
individual urls = unique domains
Yeah, the language isn't perfect right now. The "ext. links" is external links, not including internal links. But What you suggest isn't a bad idea.
Sly-grr
Yes shopstyle.com has many links from the sugar inc blog network. Actually 20 per post to be exact and 25 blogs in the network. With each blog posting about 4 times per day that's 4 posts x 25 blogs domains x 20 links per post. The equals a staggering 2000 links per day generated from sites like fabsugar.com. I'm surprised that Moztrust and their PageRank are so high though because their backlink profile is very unnatural. It seems Google hasn't notice either because Shopstyle ranks #1, 2, or 3 for every term in any of their title tags.
It really illustrates the overdependence of Google on net backlinks rather than looking for domain diversity, especially considering that all the domains are owned by one company.
Great work Nick and thanks for making this tool available to us!
That was my perception too. I just wanted to be sure I was looking at it the right way.
I was thinking that revolveclothing should get a little more credit for the diversity but apparently not. So the information at least should help them understand what to target.
Thanks
Does anyone else have the problem that you can't get the saved reports? I get the message: Error: Error: Unable to retrieve your report. whenever I try to open an existing report.
Otherwise, I'm looking forward to the updated index :)
I'm seeing some issues here as well and have asked the dev folks to look into it ASAP tomorrow morning. Sorry about that!
In the meantime, the Labs tools and new reports appear to be functioning well.
Yep i'm seeing the same error for all my saved reports as well - i ran one ok on the 15th. Anyhoo i know it'll be back up shortly :D I have noticed the index getting more accurate and bigger - great to see the progress being made!
Also the visualization tool rocks!!!
Sorry about the downtime guys :( But I'm glad that you're finding the data better and better. I have two priorities coming down from on high (in this order):
1) index size/quality
2) uptime and robust service
I'll try and make sure we deliver on BOTH moving forward.
As an aside we've gone from serving about 500,000 data requests per day to serving nearly 2 million data requests per day in the last two or three months. So there's actually HUGE pressure to keep things up and running smoothly.
Saved reports are now working and the red error box is gone.
I've just checked this out, and all I can say is awesome.
My clients are going to love this, and so am I.
Glad to hear it. If you have issues or feedback, there's a "feedback" button inside the tool that'll send mail to me and the team. So don't be shy :)
That's one big juicy index. NICE!
Totally love this tool! So easy to translate and share with others who may not understand so easily ;)
On a side note...anyone seeing errors with the term target tool? It gives me wrong information as to where my keywords are placed and not placed for a page/site. For instance, it tells me the keyword is in my URL...and it sure is not.
Has this tool been removed?
Yer that link does not work...
Been waiting for some visual Tool, so looking forward to playing with this.
Any chance of linkscape being able to produce a nice link graph from it's data?
It's supposed to be PRO only, but we had an issue that locked it out for all users. If you are PRO, please give it a go again. If you're still having issues you can PM me here at seomoz.org or send me a tweet @gerner
It's working now - thanks!
Did you hide "visualisation tool" under " linkscape comparison" in labs?
That link just takes me back to my account page.
The links in the article also take me to my account page.
(ps why cant you edit comments after x time/or whatever the cut off is?)
I'm getting the same problem.
Link to linkscape vis is redirecting to https://www.seomoz.org/users/pro
The labs tools are for pro members only I'm afraid :-( - on the flip side, pro is totally worth it :-)
Morning Tom,
That is while logged in with my pro account.
S
yep me too.... Its just redirecting me to my pro dashboard?
I'm also a pro member and getting the same
Same.
Lame.
Works fine for me guys - you can't access this page?
https://www.seomoz.org/labs/lsvisualize
Can you get to it via the labs page?
That redirects to https://www.seomoz.org/users/pro
Same here. Maybe it only works for Associates & Staff members???
Yes. I believe the same James.
The tool is PRO only.
Keep your eyes peeled in the next few days for something for everyone ;)
Just made our dev crew aware of this issue - sorry about that! Should be back on track in a few hours - my sincere apologies.
This issue has been fixed for me!
You all wake up way too early, sleeping in means that everything will be fixed when you wake up! =P
Amazing work Nick. I enjoyed the demo at SMX Advanced and I'm looking forward to incorporating the new stuff into my own SEO consulting.
Spotted the SEOmoz toolbar update around midnight GMT last night - is that right?
The actual update was earlier that night, but depending on where you are, midnight could be right. Plus there's the possibility of some propegation delay. So yes, that's roughly correct.
Great work as always guys. I love the new visualise tool - really fast information which gives you real insights. Keep up the good work!
Woot! Rand gave me a demo of some of these when I visited your offices during SMX week. So excited to see these rolled out now!
