In late August, I gave a free webinar called Link Building with Open Site Explorer. As is usual, I couldn't limit myself to just a bunch of Moz tools (always feel a bit too self-promotional when I do that), so I ended up covering more than a few others as well. I also ran through a link building methodology and process that I've seen a lot of professional firms adopting lately, though their specific systems are more advanced and customized than what I'm illustrating.
Nevertheless, I thought it would be valuable to provide the webinar, in full video form, here on the blog, along with the slide deck. Many folks may not have found the webinar in our free webinars section (bottom of the page), and I think this info is pretty useful for anyone investing in link building and wanting to use OSE.
Here's the video (92 minutes in total, the last 30 are Q+A):
And here's the slide deck:

If you're PRO, I'm doing another webinar this morning (about 9 hours after publishing this post at 10:30am Pacific, 1:30pm Eastern, 6:30pm London) on the End of Search without Social, and once again, I'll be illustrating a number of tactics that I think can be helpful for search marketing.
p.s. Sorry for the non-unique content post; I'm just way behind this week and working to catch up. Hopefully it's not too terrible a sin. Promise to be back on my blog game soon(ish), maybe after Mozcation Lima this week (oh man am I excited about that!).
This is a textbook on linkbuilding. Good job Rand. This is one that people need to take time to digest, because using the recommended tools can definitely help take a bit of the pain out of linkbuilding.
Some of them put more pain and time in though :-(. If only linkbuilding was very easy ehhhhh?
The tools are great though!
Thanks.
Is it just me who can not pause and start the video again? Since it doesn't start I try to move the time backwards and then it jumps way back (same with moving it forward). It's so annoying :(
I have calls coming in but trying to take notes in between but with this issue it is impossible.
Once somebody from SEOmoz sees this post (in Seattle I think it's 9am now so they will see it soon) then I am sure they will fix it for you.
Jumping around in long videos can be tough - this might be an issue with Wistia (though I have the same problem with long videos on YouTube sometimes, too). You could try playing it here: https://www.seomoz.org/webinars/using-open-site-explorer-to-uncover-new-marketing-opportunities or using a different browser (Chrome seems to work best for me; right now, I'm able to jump around above without issue - the video can take a few seconds to catch up to the audio, though).
I am using Chrome. Today it seems to be working a little better. Thank you.
I've tried it in Firefox, Chrome and Safari, but they are all giving me trouble. For example, it won't let me click anywhere between 18:03 and 28:47. If I need to stop at any point in that section, I have to go back to 18:03 to begin listening again. I've been trying to watch this over a few days now, and still haven't got through the full video. Very frustrating!
Is there any way to download the video?
I believe it is 50% browser and 50% Internet connection. I happen to be very lucky to live in a part of the country where I can get DL speeds over 100 Mb per a second & upload around 25 Mb per second. I'm sorry to get off track don't waste your time talking about my Internet however I do feel it plays a huge role in your ability to accurately in relation to online videos I've personally find Wistia much easier to use or control I should say then YouTube. Try using slower or faster Internet and doing the same thing at a buddies house I bet you'll be able to tell a big difference
Check My Links Chrome Extension should most definitely be added to this list. I just found it (via one of Ross Hudgen's tweets) and it's kinda my new favorite link building tools (broken link checker, but really, really fast & efficient). I recently wrote a Youmoz post about it, hope it goes live soon so the Moz community knows how I use it for link building :)
I am always checking the webinar section but never really watched any of them due to poor audio quality but I have just clicked play and I see things have drastically improved which is good, think I start giving them ago now.
This information is so helpful. I've been using some of these techniques since your webinar and they're already paying off.
Thanks for following webinar again this will going to give me great opportunity to interact with some great tools and also with some intelligent stuff for search marketing. I am a non - pro member and pretty new to the MOZ so I am exited and knowledge hungry. So I am definitely looking forward to all the great stuff you are going to share sir. Thanks again.
Hey Rand,
Actually, I'm quite grateful that you decided to go with the follow up to the webinar for your post :) I was bombarded with distractions on the day of the webinar, so missed some bits and didn't get all the tools written down at the time. Been meaning to go back and revisit ever since, but had not gotten to do it.
So magically there appears in the SEOmoz Blog a neat list of all the tools, along with a copy of the slide deck...nicely done!
Looking forward to tomorrow's webinar - taking the phone off the hook and banning all two and four-legged distractions!
Big +1 to FollowerWonk from me - great tool! :)
I’m definitely enjoying your blog and look forward to new posts. many thanks for publishing this article.
Information about tools is so helpful. Great post
Thanks for sharing.
Yes, I am also having no luck with playing video. If I pause and come back the video will not play, and I have to select a time, however if im at 13 mins it only lets me select like 11:34 & 18:00 so I miss or either have to rewatch. SUX big time ;-(
Tool from seo moz are really useful and powerful. The best which i liked most is site explorer. It helps me lot.
I am new to SEO, lots of good information. Thanks.
I really love your webinars... except for the fact that I feel that they are a little too long. LOL, which certainly is not a bad thing! Keep up the great work, really appreciate what you and seoMOZ offer to the community!
Sorry if this post angers some, but I have got say that it convinces me more so about the need to purchase the SEOMoz program. I am totally amazed at the knowledge that SEOMoz has. You guys rock!
Wow! this just the best article about link building on the internet. Thank you very much Rand!
PS: maybe its time tou you change your SO, WinXp have just 10 years.
What with our move to Scotland and business being busy, I've only just got round to this. That was an hour well spent. Got some great notes to broaden the scope of link-building and some great stuff to experiment with. Thanks for this - protecting the link profile is so hard with some clients, but I'm hoping with this I can offer encouragement for the long-term rather than short-term gain!
Thanks, great post.
Good post rand enjoyed the slides =) Also love the SEER post aswell some good content over at their blog check it out almost as much as the SEOmoz blogs ;)
That is really massive post by Rand again. Webinar is always integral part of seomoz fans including me as well. Very useful resource for link building and the tools you have mention they are pretty good. Thank you Rand for this wonderful post and glad to be a part of this community:)
Thank you Rand for your great post
Thank you for these advices. To me OSE is a great and complete tool, but it seems like the new version is not steady, maybe because it's more complete than the previous one; so these days i need to upload and re-upload to have a full report.
Anyway its remains a useful tool for my delay seo tasks
What issues are you having? We thought we'd fixed everything folks have been writing in about, but let us know if there's still a problem you're seeing.
I always pick something up from these great blog posts (possibly less than your average bear but all stored under useful information). You could give an undergraduate course with even a subset of the material (now there’s an idea!)
I however have two questions that I am not 100% sure of from the post above that I would really appreciate some clarification on. When you mention posts that are old that could do with revisiting how would you actually find these? Would it purely be through blog search?
In your Link acquisition list you have (of course for demonstration purposes) 7-8 links. Do you think this is the way to go? Create a list like this and focus on it for x days, weeks and see if 20-30% gives results?
I really enjoyed this webinar, great approach on how to start thinking as an SEO marketer and find good link oppertunities. Thanks for posting Rand
Hi Rand,
Great, thanks.
Thanks for sharing this.
I guess you should of included Twitter as well really?
Oh, good! I attended this webinar on my iPhone and it had some trouble displaying the slide deck via the GoToMeeting app. Thanks for putting this up! You had some really excellent points in the webinar, and I hope to implement them shortly.
Wow! You can watch webinars on your iPhone? I'm impressed :-)
Rand
Ask Tom Critchlow or Mike King where I watch Whiteboard Friday. I'd be surprised if they forgot, they had a pretty good time making fun of me for it :-)
-Dan
Next time I suggest you to use the iPad (if you have it), as those issues seem fewer than over the iPhone.
Thanks Rand!
I missed this when it first went out for Pro Members. Great top to bottom resource for linkbuilding. Many linkbuilding articles just focus on one tactic, but you seem to have curated the best in a great linear approach. Love the excel sheet at the end. And its great to learn about more that can be done with OSE - it really seems only restriced by imagination.
-Dan
Dude, this is awesome. I created an account just to tell you that. lol
Very cool that you provided some tools that aren't part of the moz bundle. You guys always provide twists that I would have never thought of on my own. Thanks again.
Now a days SEO is key for the success of online bussiness.Link Building is all about building quality backlinks to your web site. It genrate more terafic in you site.

Hi Rand,
don't feel sorry about this post!
Psst... my link was a "reaction test"... good to see the results.
Ok, I thumbed myself down for my actual fault in making myself understand... anyway it seems that to say this post is a nice gift for not pro members make angry someone...
Hello Sir Rand,
Although you made today’s blog post almost at the 11th Hour but this is similarly awesome as any other Rand Fishkin posts on SEOmoz… :)
I just looked at slide share presentation for right now and the video is pending for later today! :)
Although the process seems pretty lengthy but once one go through the complete process and get the data in the excel sheet then all he need to do is to use his head a bit and boom!
This is surly a good gift to non pro memebers!
