Ah, it is indeed a beautiful Whiteboard Friday here in the Emerald City.
This week Rand steps behind the camera so Rebecca, Jane and I can give you some tips on how to make the most of SES New York.
It's aimed at the newbie conference goer, but Jane also provides some session recommendations and (as if that weren't enough) we also have something for the non-conference goers: A top-secret reveal of the latest Googledance!
Love the video - especially the tips on being social for us losers ;)
hahaha, i think we all needed thoes tips to get us further in life. Or am i just speaking for myself?
Yoshi t-shirts rock!
And it's great seeing the rest of the team taking over and owning the success of Whiteboard Friday - great job Mozers!
PS. Googlebot dance also a hit!
Thanks! Rand reminded us the day before that we'd be on camera taping a Whiteboard Friday. As a result, Jane showed up looking the nicest in her lovely button-up shirt, Scott looked casual but still put together in his button up shirt, and I looked like a hobo/starving student hybrid in a Yoshi t-shirt. Oh well.
Ah, wish I could go to this one. It looks like there will be some great topics and speakers, plus it's in NYC. Hopefully time will permit for next years.
I am counting on some good coverage from the field, so hopefully you continue the trend with the comic strips and highlight posts.
There will be comics...oh yes, there will be comics!
Good to know in advance. The London and Chicago ones were classic!
I recommend anyone not familiar with these to head over to the articles page and flick your mouse wheel once or twice down to the latest comics on SES.
Was there ever a doubt?
Great tips guys :)
I have to admit, being my first SES I was blown away at the SEO star power in NYC! I had every intention of taking hundreds of pictures of the SEO rockstars and came home today to see that I have 4 pictures!
Fun flight home btw, (I didn't scream like a little girl either) :P And Rebecca the heely's lessons start tomorrow!

I almost always chose base on presenter instead of the subject.
Back in college I chose classes based on professors more than the subject of the class. I figured if the teacher was good I was going to learn something regardless of the subject matter. That wasn't the case with a good subject, but a bad teacher.
Excellent point. I did that too. Don't forget that not everyone's will be a household name like 'Van Gogh'. You'll miss a lot, perhaps even the next 'big thing' if you don't also check out Frédéric Bazille and other unknowns.
Very true Gillian and thumbs up for finding an impressionist painter I hadn't heard of before. I didn't think that possible. If you had joined Rand in New York you could have visited the Metropolitan Museum. I always stop in at the Impressionist wing when I'm there.
Admittedly I did take some classes just because the subject matter interested me even if I didn't know who the professor was. I found about half of those classes I dropped after a day or two and the other half turned into some unexpected pleasures.
Whoei found another video i love it great work!
Oh, because I know Will (and perhaps a few others) will want to know, this weeks music is "Huddle Formation" by The Go! Team.
:) Thanks!
Great tips from Rebecca on note taking, networking, and approaching SEO ‘stars.’ Looking forward to some of the highlights from the show. Do all the speakers post their notes or ppt presentations online at the same location, or just on their individual sites?
The vast majority of presentations are made available online after the show. There will be a URL and password in your conference guide that will give you access to the materials.
Some are available on SES's NY conference site, some are made available on the speaker's site. Some won't be available.
However, a lot of these slides are usually one or two words, because those presenters elaborated in their presentation, so sometimes seeing only the slides if you didn't see the presentation isn't that valuable.
They do that deliberately so you can't skip their session and get it all from the slides
*says the woman who _ADDED_ notes to her slides for the memory stick copy*
lol..you guys made me laugh.
Man, I am really bummed that I couldn't go to SES NYC. Should be a whole lot of fun. I will definitely be looking forward to the comic strip!
I learned something about choices in Chicago, when I purposely chose a session on Podcasting and SEO, which I knew zip about. I didn't know the speakers either. I came away totally blown away by Amanda Watlington.
Yeah, I was thinking of hitting some PPC sessions so I can learn more about it. The one downside to going with speakers you know is that sometimes you end up going to the same sessions.
I did record an addendum about the speakers, but Scott scrapped it because it would have made the video too long. I'll basically summarize what I said:
Some speakers aren't as good as others because they're new, and I attested to this because I mentioned how hard it was to speak in Portland, and how nervous I was. I concluded that you should give new speakers a try, too, and not give them a hard time if they're not as great. If you see them perform kind of crappily after quite a few speaking engagements, however, then maybe that's just how they perform publicly.
Rebecca,If you're interested in PPC, I'd like to personally invite you (and all of the gang here) to our panel on advanced paid search on Tuesday at 4PM. I'll be discussing techniques for optimizing tail phrases.
I'm a new speaker to SES and haven't spoken at a major show since before the net bubble burst (last one was an Economist conference in Dec 2000). So, I may be a little rusty. Anyway, it would be great to see some friendly faces in the crowd!
Jon,
Thanks for the invite. That sounds like a session we'd definitely like to attend. Unfortunately, we Mozzers and a few other folks need to cut out a bit early on Tuesday to go see a taping of Letterman.
Nonetheless, break a leg up there and be sure to say 'hi' if you see us wandering around!
I saw Amanda speak on a similar topic in London and found her both informative and entertaining.
Top secret reveal of the google dance, I laughed a little too loud and was forced to reveal it to my coworkers.
Ill be looking foward to the reviews.
I feel deprived because my home computer doesn't have a sound card (old rack mount I haven't bothered to change over to a new box mainly because the mail server requires actual thought to move... yesh)
Mind you... I got the day off work PAID so there's a plus....
Good Friday, indeed!
*teeheehee*
You are right about popping in and out of sessions. At one session in NY last year, I was literally falling asleep during the 2nd and 3rd speakers. It was the only session out of all the sessions I attended that I thought was so incredibly boring, but I was sitting very close to the front and felt bad about offending the speakers, so I stayed put. Big mistake, especially since so many awesome sessions were offered.
I got over it quickly. By the last day, I sat in on every single session offered in one time slot. OK - that was a bit of overkill, but it was the last session of the last day of my first SES show.
I look forward to meeting all of you Mozzers and my other favorite SEO people here in New York next week.
great videocast guys, Rebecca your really make me laugh =)
On approching SEO celebrities: At SES London I was standing outside one of the session rooms talking with Rand when someone randomly took a picture of Rand. There is no officially SEO paparzzi out there lol
Oh and when I met Danny Sullivan at the after party he brought doughnuts, I grabbed a doughnut and giggled...that was it. (tip: dont' do that it just makes you look stupid)
Well at least I didn't follow anyone to the toilet, and that actually did happen at London SES. According to Househunter (Dan the man), he overheard someone approaching Dave Naylor in the toilet...whilst he was peeing! Not a great time to approach someone...
If it had deen a girl at least there would have been a code of conduct that might have made it less... gross but..
ewwwwwww
you put me off my tea
