This week we're diving into the hiring game - trying to find the people who will help us make both the free and premium content on the site even more valuable over the weeks and months to come. Jane's in charge of hiring our new customer service / office manager and Jeff's doing double-duty, seeking out both a web developer and a GUI designer. We've already received one resume that's so incredibly cool, I've just got to share:
Brockway Sampson Applies to SEOmoz (for those who aren't aware, Brock is a bodyguard character from the ingenius animated series, the Venture Bros.)
Despite the stiff competition, I'd love it if you checked out and shared our open positions on Craigslist (after all, the best people almost always come through community referrals):
- Dear Exceptionally Talented Admin Rockstars
- Seeking Web Development Rockstar
- Seeking User Interface & Web Design Rockstar (yes, yes, we have a pattern of using a particular noun in our hiring posts)
On to the link roundup for the last couple weeks!
- Gary Price notes that Wikipedia may not be the fully open system it is today for much longer.
- Danny covered Nielsen's Search Engine market share data - I personally think Google is much closer to 70-75% - Loren shows us Hitwise's numbers, which puts them ~65%
- Aaron Wall has some terrific Link Building Tips based on New Search Filters
- Donna has a really good question for Adam Lasnik. I'd love to know the answer to that, too :)
- Sketchcast launched this week - I got to play with it in early beta, and I think I might give it a spin for a Whiteboard Friday sometime soon (need to get a pen input device, first).
- I'm so envious of Brian Clark and Copyblogger lately - every post & every title is linkbait, but no one seems to give him a hard time about it (maybe I just need thicker skin) :)
- Rae's got a terrific post on paid links that Google will never spot.
- Since Fantomaster's triumphant return to blogging, he's had some great posts, including one on Blackhat tactics (from way back in June) and one on defending from DDOS attacks.
- Alex (aka Shylock) has a great post on white hat link building (I like it mostly for the format)
- That Adam Guy is offering to answer your questions in Google Groups
- Speaking of Google Groups - John Mu, webmaster turned Googler, analyzes stats for the forum - cool stuff.
- I'm one of those geeks who likes to take a peek at where design might be heading, and I think this post actually gets close.
Don't worry about me... I'm not busy...also... What great links did I miss?
Thanks for the kind words, Rand.
Jane, I know what game you're playing and it's working.
See you all soon.
Oh....my....god.
Sampson is back :)
Great round up.
My quick summary on all the links above...
Wikipedia – going the way of DMOZ? I would hate to think that it will be impossible to add content to it...
Nielsen Ratings – I think the data is inconsistent – consider the fact that one of the highest searched terms in Yahoo is “Google” (maybe I am wrong - shoot me ;-)
I usually like Aaron’s ideas – but the link building this time round is a bit too “grey” for me…
The question for Adam – definitely worth asking, and I am sure some Real Estate people have been asking this for a while… I would add the question as a vice versa as well…
Sketchcast – looks worth investigating… wonder if they have or are planning a face book application – would work wonders – a step up from graffiti..
Copy blogger – fairly honestly, never looked at it before, but seems it may be worth a look.
Rae’s post – this sort of thing is quite common in the UK….
Black Hat SEO – errr no comment? ;-)
Shylock – linkbuilding methods – good summary – caould be useful for internal training…
Adam’s question sessions – any one point him to Donna’s page?
Forum stats.. hmm…
Logo Orange – I really like that link Rand – thanks, very useful… ;-)
My links for the week:
Get invites to yahoo Mash
Baagz.com - social media – (if anyone of you can actually log in ;-)
Linkbait? What's that?
Rand:
Like Whiteboard Friday, this should become a weekly column. I wish you podcast it.
Great post.
Thanks for the tip on SketchCast I like the idea, and really have a hard time getting around to posting on my blog simply because of time.
You mentioned getting pen input device, is this something they have now?
Thanks for the links. Really dug the "Fresh Link Building" article. Sketchcast looks like an interesting concept. It might be neat to attempt one of those old time PBS "storytime" shows where an artist depicts what the story teller is saying.
You guys definitely need a Toronto, Ontario office. :P I'll help you set one up there.
Or an Australian office - I'd put the Oz in SEOmoz.
I'd even let Jane visit Mordor now and then.
Nah... Anybody who is anybody HAS to have an office at Lake Tahoe. (Oh, how I wish I could be in Seattle!.. :)
Psst, shor - I don't think they really have any vacancies, they just like to taunt us Aussies with their "nya nya you're on the wrong continent" attitude ;)
Except you're not on the wrong continent. Since arriving home from a year in Sydney back at the turn of the decade I've suggested setting up an office in Oz to every boss I've had - why do none of them take me up on it?!
;)
Ooh can I please?! It's been a very long time. I could set up the Middle Earch office and help put together SMX Wellington!
I second that notion and have some free office space whenever needed... in Toronto that is
I found Donna's question to Adam to be very interesting and I really would like to see how he answers it. Linking out to bad neighborhoods can really hurt a site. On one hand sites that just link out to anyone who will trade links with them should probably be held responsible for linking to a bad neighborhood but if you link to a site that was a useful resource 2 years ago and decided to do some shady things you should not be penalized. I understand that we are responsible for our sites but if you have thousands of pages, especially in blogs, that link out to a lot of other sites it could be difficult to constantly monitor them to verify the outbound links are still going to quality sites. Let's hope Adam answers it without telling us to simply add no-follow to all of our outbound links to avoid this possibility.
Thanks Rand, I really like these round-up style posts.
That Brockway guy is an idiot. He didn't even specify which job he was applying to. Way to not get hired, famous TV dood!
Better be careful. He has the means and license to kill. That made for a good laugh. I would love to have a "lack of vulnerability" and a "Level 8, Class A License to kill". Unfortunately I only have a Level 6 Class B License myself.
Not to mention the "World Class Lover" qualification. I'd put stuff like that on my resume' to if I didn't think women would just roll over laughing
Aw... why would a little thing like that put you off from hiring him - sounds like a lovable guy...
LOL thats a nice response to have jane.
That Brockway resume was hilarious. :-)
I wonder how you'll boss that guy around when he has to do some boring task... will be fondling his bowie knife while you speak...
