This is a podcast highlighting all the new stuff we've added to SEOmoz with the launch of our new site. I tried to cover all the new features we added, including explaining MozPoints and the details of our premium membership. This is my first podcast and I'm using the feedburner smartcasting, so let me know if everything works ok.
SEOmoz V3 Podcast
Moz News
The author's views are entirely his or her own (excluding the unlikely event of hypnosis) and may not always reflect the views of Moz.
It's better than a screencast in my view because you can listen and follow by performing the actions yourself. A screencast would have been much longer but perhaps more suited to those who have never used or seen SEOmoz before. Thumbs Up!
I have to agree with duz. I thought I was going to be disappointed by not having a screencast to walk through, but you did a great job of covering everything pretty clearly Matt. Very professional, and if you keep it up I'm sure that Rand might be asking for a few more "appearances" from you as part of your job description.
Matt,
thanks for taking the time to do this. I agree that it was nice as a quick run through with just the audio.
Hopefully though, once all the fires... okay, most of the fires are put out, you still revisit this with video. I think they both have their merits and uses, and aren't necessarily replacements for the other.
Video would still provide a great way to provide a more detailed walk-through, especially calling out and demonstrating any of the more subtle features that may get missed.
cheers
Popular YOUmoz posts will get moved to the SEOmoz blog, which is great. I may be linking to the YOUmoz posts. If the YOUmoz posts gets moved to the SEOmoz blog, will my link to the YOUmoz posts become broken?
Nope - it will re-direct without problems.
Hey Oatmeal,
Nice audio guide. It will give newcomers a decent introduction to the features available.
It's a shame about the lack of video. I think a combination of audio + video would have been perfect as viewers would know exactly what parts of the site you are talking about. You should check out Camtasia. I use it a lot to do in-house training video.
Matt the poscast was a great way to explain the site. As was pointed out above it was easy to listen in one tab while naviagting the site and following along in another tab.
Ok I admit it. I got the idea from duz.
I spent some time over the weekend and exploring the site more and I just keep getting more and more impressed with everything. I love the draggable comment window, which makes it so much easier to scroll back up and check something in a post before I make a fool of myself and comment on the wrong thing.
Can we edit our comments? My typing skills are lacking and I always come across a few things I want to correct.
You're right the concept of MozPoints is just plain fun and in time is going to be a great way to honor some of the members here who deserve to stand out.
I could go on and on.
This site has always been great, but now I feel like I'm discovering something every time I visit and enjoying each new discovery.
Thanks vangogh :)
There's a bug that's preventing you from editing your comments, I'll have it fixed soon
Where is the feed? I couldn't find it in itunes to subscribe and i can't find version v2 or v1 in your search. Would love to listen and know when new versions are out.
Try subscribing to our feedburner feed
I'm alreayd subscribed to your RSS via google reader, or is this link just for the podcast?
The Feedburner Feed contains the V3 podcasts only (if loaded with iTunes).
This is no surprise, because the feed has only the most recent blog posts and not only the podcasts. V1 and V2 must date a while back. I keep an archive of old feed content in my reader. I might be able to find them.
p.s. The recent video cast (Digg vs. Reddit) did also not show up in iTunes, because it is only linked to in a way that iTunes can not make sense of it.
I use Feedreader for Blogs and iTunes for Podcasts. I turned off the enclosure download in Feedreader to avoid a mess (some podcasts come always with a post which is shitty to read (if at all) via iTunes).
If you are getting more serious with podcasting and videocasting, seriously consider a separate feed (I saw already multiple videos with him all over, WebProNews etc.).
We will have software that will makes sense out of feeds all by itself and make the use of mixed feeds easy, but for now are we stuck with software that may be does one thing good and sucks at the other.
I am not able to comment using Firefox. I clicked the "add comment" link while not logged in and nothing happened. I decided to login and then clicked the "add comment" link and nothing happened again. I am using Firefox 1.5. I had a co-worker test it on her computer and she had the same problem...
I had to open up my least favorite browser (IE) just to leave this comment.
I'm working on testing it in firefox 1.5
You guys are on the right track- podcasts and video blogs are going to blow up very soon.
Yes, the podcast is alright. Did you use special microphone or some filters (there does not seem to be any noise)?
I snagged a headset from Rand's desk and used Audacity.
I agree Duz, I navigated around the site whilst Matt was talking. Great job Matt, love the new site!
Although saying that, it's always fun to actually see the SEOmoz staff talking =) I loved the interview Rand did with Vanessa Fox, so funny!
Thats it 'thumb up and thumbs down' say it slowly.. but i guess it was 'close to midnight'
Yeah the podcast is better { than screencast }, as said i was able to browse the site while listening to the audio so that was a plus; premium member .......sounds enticing.
great work you guys
Just wanted to say that I love the new look. You guys are ahead of the curb, at least when it comes to social(izing) your subject matters. Very clever use of your community.
Although the points thingy is compelling, I'0m afraid this is going to turn into a race to see who ranks better inside seomoz. You shouldn't play with our ranking addictions... :(
Here's another vote for podcasts instead of screencasts. As was mentioned above, a visitor can follow along around the site AND/OR continue with other tasks if there is a dull moment in a podcast. Not that there was one.
A little hint:
It's not a podcast without a feed. Where is the podcast RSS to subscribe to where we can find podcast V1 and V2 and also get automatically all upcoming podcasts?
Without a feed is it only a voice recording in mp3 format and nothing more. :)
Okay, it's more than a hint, but I think you know what I mean. Cheers!
p.s. I am looking forward to more podcasts from the SEOMoz team.
You have to use our feedburner RSS to get the feed stuff (it's using smartcasting)
Amazing, Matt. You've been working on a Sunday... until midnight.
I actually agree with the comments above. The podcast is genius - I can follow along in my browser and even though I know all the features, I'm still enjoying it. Bravo, sir!
