Hopefully I'm not contributing to the noise on SEOmoz by writing this post, but I think a quick entry on the subject is warranted. Very few people capitalize SEOmoz properly - and by capitalize I mean in terms of grammar (not money). We're the ones to blame, our name isn't exactly something anyone would know how to capitalize considering that it's a combination of an acronym (SEO) and a part of a word (moz). To add to the confusion, our logo is mysteriously all lowercased. I know this isn't a big deal, but I see enough people writing it incorrectly, so I figured I'd just give you all a quick heads up.
Correct capitalization: SEOmoz
SEO: capitalize it
moz: no caps
Also, to anyone who isn't in the SEO industry that happens to read this: it's pronounced essy-oh-ma's, although it does amuse me to hear sea-moss every one in awhile.
How to Capitalize SEOmoz

Thanks for the heads up, MOZnazi.
Just because of this post, I will bastardize the spelling and pronunciation of EZOmos every single chance I get.
The number of comments is unreal though. - I liken SOOmoz's comment section to the bar after conference sessions - good stuff.
Remember Jennifer with a "G"?
Hi,Matt,we are still in the confusion that this is a serious post or not. We've always pronounced "SEOmoz" as esio-moss.If that's still a mistake we'll rectify it.Thanks for the remembrance. raj
This is a joke post, right?
The best way to make sure everyone misuses your name is to tell them not to. Don't believe me? Just google it!
I don't have time for this!!
and it's pronounced essy-oh-mawz (SEOmoz), not essy-oh-ma's (SEOmahz)
Couldn't help but notice that this 'noise' post just got 32 posts in no time flat. Mostly from people who don't hve time for this kind of nonsense. Hmmmmmmmm.
Nice observatioin Gillian. I guess everybody does love the "noise" more than they indicated on the signal to noise ration post.
I read it...
I'm still not sure why, but I'm not exactly sorry I did...
I think there's a difference between noise and 'bad' noise.
Off topic, diversionary noise is good -particularly when it generates discussion and especially when it's a discussion about your brand.
p.s.
I even signed up for an account to post that.
... on a Saturday night.
Hot time in Kentucky eh, Mike?
Acutally, it's great to have you here and I couldn't care less which post got you to sign up :)
Branding is important.
This thread, as a well known English Gent, would say... "Makes me LOL".
I'll admit I do get somewhat annoyed when I get emails with the opening line reading " Hi Scottfish..." - my immediate thought is that they saw me on DP.
Go SEA-Moz! :) (And SEAHAWKS!)
The logo says: seomoz
Therefore the name is seomoz. :)

All the noise, noise, noise from who-ville?
I found you a new avatar: https://www.neurolearning.com/images/grinch.jp...
Aww.. how cute.. :)
Look up simmal tree, you'll understand why it's my user name :)
This is the thread that never ends. Yes, it goes on and on my friends. Someone started posting it not knowing what it was, and they'll continue posting it forever just because,
(start at top again)
Was reading this thread when suddenly an old song from when my kids were little, called "This is the song that never ends" popped into my head. Wiki
Not sure if it has been said but rand f'd up.
He should have registered the name to be SEO-moz.org for better search engine placement. ;)
Is this the kid of post that it is OK to throw a "me too" into? I have nothing to say, but this thread is hot. I want people to see me here. Makes me look cool.
SEOmos rules.
I plan on launching a public petition to force SEOmoz to write it and spell their brand "seoMOZ".
I mean yes, since MOZ is more personal and related to their company, I recommend the petition forces them to switch to seoMOZ, ending the confusion.
Wait... it's Sunday morning and we're still discussing this?!
Scratch Sunday. Wednesday?!?!
ROFLMAO!
I honestly can't believe this is a serious post! Think it's just Matt having some friday fun and try to piss everybody off by his sarcasme.
And it worked as well! Beautifully done!
Matt? Sarcastic?
That's just crazy-talk.
Yeah, comment bait. And you were all hooked!!
Muahaha indeed.
Nah... not Matt. NEVER.
seomoz SEOMOZ Seomoz SEOmoz seoMOZ SEOMoz SEOMoz seoMoz SeoMoz SeOmOz sEoMoZ SEomOZ SEomoz seomOZ seOMOZ
mmmmuuaahahahahahaa
ahh my eyes!
Well, 1 out of 15 ain't bad. Oh, wait...
:)
yup... that about covers it. And I'll take your checks with any of the above. So will the bank. ;)
Ya mean it's not pronounced "schmoz"? Truly, after a few beers, or ten, it truly must :)
Pssshshhhhhhhtttt....I can't hear anything over the noise...pppsssshshhhhhhhhhtttt
Seriously. Get over the caps thing.
People misspell our company name all the time (I'm not talking caps, I'm talking wrong letters). But the checks keep clearing, so I don't care.
Even I don't get it right sometimes and accidently hold the shift key too long and get "SEOMoz" instead of "SEOmoz"...
Nice timing on this one, Matt - I just asked about concerns over signal to noise... It feels like your irony gland just overflowed :)
Sometimes it's just the little things that annoy the heck out of you... "Jane Copeland" is the bane of my existence. I realise that many of you mightn't think the spelling / punctuation issue is anything to think about, but I can't believe anyone would shrug it off when their name is misspelled over and over again.
I need to write one of these on my blog for spelling my last name, just about everyone (including seoMOZ) :) misspells it. I'm used to it though.
Or how to pronounce Olthuis ;)
I don't get it. First of all your logo is your brand and as you say it is all lower case which in my opinion a much better brand. Secondly why on earth do you care whether people capitalize it or not. Do you think some might get seoMOZ confused with the company Seomoz? Sorry this is not only noise, its white noise. (And I participated, oh no).
maTT ---- i am sooooo soryy about the bad punctuashun and grammer that come from ppul on the Blag i will never ever ever spell SEOmoz rong ever again 4-reals.
You wouldn't believe the amount of people that write Zappo's instead of Zappos. You might be just a little bit too nitpicky on this one. seomoz doesn't suffer for lack of capitalization typographically. Just think how bad Yellowpipe has it with their seoo tool...
I'll concede this post is a bit noisy. I don't post very often, however, and when I do it usually makes a pretty big ripple, so I figured one noisy post to alleviate a pet peeve was allowed.
Showoff.
I'm not particularly hung up on how this pertains to branding or targeted keywords, it was more of a personal issue. It'd be like someone constantly spelling my last name wrong or pronouncing a silent letter and me correcting them, except I did it on much larger scale :)
You can go back and fix all mine then :) I think Rand must have missed the comments I left correcting him.
No seriously, I even have several RSS feeds setup for all the versions of my last name.
Kinda - except in this analogy, you'd be spelling/pronouncing your name incorrectly in most of the places you wrote/said it (see logo), then expect everyone else to get it right.
So, just tweak the logo a bit so that people know. :)
For what it's worth, I understand why Matt wanted to educate us on the proper spelling. It's important for branding purposes to be consistent and to maintain control. Otherwise, you risk diluting the brand, and possibly even losing your trademark.
That said, it's not our job to protect your brand, so I've never understood the point of trying to educate the public with a remedial lesson. If you focus on building the brand in new and creative ways, we'll honor your brand organically.
Great point on the trademark risk Rob.
If the attempt was to help reinforce the SEOmoz brand and trademark, I think it would have been better received with a little background for the need and some further reading on the subject.
Just my 2 cents - I'm more than happy to filter the occasional noise for the regular gems.
I always call it Seymour's :).
So who is Seymour?
Seymour is a world class engineer and our east coast presence. He consults on some of our technical projects.
Apologies for all the mis-spellings from me. And I've been a Seemoss person for a while too... About a year in fact.
Pants :p
It is a representation of the company and the brand... so timing maybe wasn't the best ;) but in many ways, just like getting a person's name right, it is a sign of respect.
So maybe sometimes you need to make a little noise.
ok this is one of those noise posts. it reminds me of the post when Google told us how to use the word "google. "
Yeah, I'm probably just being anal-retentive. Luckily when the new site launches you'll be able to "thumbs down" posts and comments you're not too fond of.
