I just placed the following ad on Craigslist here in Seattle, and thought I'd share it here on the blog as well...
Mighty LAMP Coders of Seattle, Heed Our Cry
Don't be wooed by the big firms; come to a place where your talents are appreciated, your voice is heard, and your code has an impact. If you can answer the following 5 questions with an empathic “heck, yeah!” then please, send an email right now (well, actually, look through the job specs, then send that email). :)
- Does the Internet cower before your webdev prowess?
- Are you a huge fan of the Daily Show & Colbert Report?
- Is your hatred for cubicles exceeded only by your desire to make the web a better place?
- Do you love the Venture Brothers (or at least promise to watch an episode after we lend you the DVDs)?
- Would you like to, on occasion, go to fun conferences in far-off cities and participate in comics like these - Chicago, London, New York?
If you've answered yes to the above, congratulations! You're our kind of developer and we can't wait to meet you.

We know that applying for jobs can be tough, frustrating and even, on occasion, soul-crushingly depressing. We empathize, and we hope that your search leads you to something truly excellent. Thanks for your application - Craigslist rocks...
While our financial compensation certainly isn't the highest in the industry, we've had terrific success bringing in hungry, talented entry level folks that others rejected due to lack of degree or specific experience, and we plan to continue with that model. Look for a new mozzer on the team sometime in August. :)
p.s. Actually... Now that I look at it, according to PayScale, the median salary for a web developer with 1-4 years of experience is actually $47K (scroll down on the page).
I know the Moz is looking for a local candidate, but for anyone wondering about relocating to apply, Seattle is super friendly to the majority of coders/geeks and their geeky needs.
While there are a lot more PROs, there are a few CONs to living in Seattle:
I hope I'm pretty close to the mark. I'm going solely based on what I remember from a few years ago and what I was reminded of last month during the SMX trip.
Nice one Roadies, you should work at TripAdvisor or something :P
The points about tech culture, coffee and food were enough to have me salivating...
Thanks shor! I am working on a Las Vegas guide now (where I currently live). After that, maybe I'll start one up for Seattle and a few other favorite cities of mine.
If you haven't been to Seattle before it's well worth a trip just to check out the vibe. I really hope that SMX is hosted there annually, then I'll at have an excuse to return at least once per year.
You should add that they must use wordpad for web development
That comment goes so well with your current 'angry' profile picture :)
It really does go phenomenally well. I'm surprised you didn't get more idiosyncratic input into the ad like 'must work when Matt says so' and 'must fetch Matt his morning coffee' for the first 90 days as part of the trial.
You would deny me context coloring and integrated FTP? That's cold.
hehe, thats where I started. Does that mean I would have to use a PC?
I've become a textmate fan on my Mac at work.
Roadies sales pitch was almost enough to get me to change my mind over relocating and apply
White Hat SEO my arse! ;o)
What a cool descript! :P
Pity Im in the UK, I woulda given it a go!
You guys can even make a job posting cool!
Inspiration to us all!
You know what I love about you guys (no I didn't apply - clueless in the dev area.)
...You gave the salary - its transparent - its great! You know what you want via your job description, and provide a salary expectation. Good for you SeoMOZ! I hope the rest of them sit up and take notice!
Maybe it's just Canada (last interview) - but I get pretty freaked at a stressful job interview when they say '...Sooo, what salary do you expect?'
What on earth are you supposed to say? You say .e.g. $70K and its too low and they take it… you say $120K and its too high and they pass you over…
Coming from the UK last year – I made the mistake of saying ‘whatever suits the position’ – being me… and well… lets leave it at that – for now…..
I LOVE that you made it easy for people to know what you expected and backed it with a salary… heck, if I knew C++ from C# from a piano (which I play relatively well - ahem - apparently... ) I’d be there… right now I’m hanging on a very happy place in hopes… a very happy place indeed :)
Transparency is key, and SeoMOz seems to have it – keep it, it might stress out your inbox, but it will endear you to EVERYONE !!
... edit is spelling - weird word required changing to normal mortal understanding :)
Wow salaries definately vary between the US and the UK
I have 2 years experience as a web developer (contracting), I wouldn't get out of bed for less than £200/$400 per day.
I just told my boss I may be moving to Seattle.
Other than the whole 'have to be in seattle' requirement I would be all over that job. Its exactly what I do
Wow - that is the coolest job description I have ever read. If only I was a web developer & lived in Seattle ....
I would remove the requirement of liking the Daily Show... Jon Stewart is just not that funny anymore... but I do think his correspondents are hilarious.
Stephen Colbert is still funny as hell.
I hope you don't make the developer post a blog entry here as part of the hiring process. Most good programmers I know are not the best writers.
I disagree. Jon Stewart still has great interviews and his opening sequence always seems to be on the money.
Nope, that little test was reserved for the SEO position. Programmers need not worry.
Wow! Cool job specs. I am sure that you will find a perfect person soon.
Rand, once again, one of the coolest job postings / insights into an HR department I've ever read. I foresee you guys getting a GREAT developer / ...or THE GREATEST DEVELOPER? in Seattle :)
Seriously, if I had a grunt level job at Microsoft I would jump at the opportunity trade in my MSFT for some MOZZ in a year.
Who wouldn't want to work for the Moz?
Yeah - I want to work for the Moz and I run my own company in the UK... (Duncan's been taking Matt's advice and trying out cake - it seems cool - I've dabbled and it's just so damn powerful).
Rand - I hope you don't mind me hijacking your job post, but we're also hiring for a similar role (though more graphics / less cake) in London. It's also entry-level, but could be a great starting point for someone ambitious - we're growing pretty quick. If you're in our area and fancy it, head on over and complete our wufoo form (where we used some of the advice Matt gave in his post on questions to ask web recruits a while back).
I've never heard of the Daily Show & Colbert Report (what's TV?) so I'd probably be disqualified, even if I was a PHP ninja. I stick to nerd stuff like Daily Search Cast :-P
Can't help you with the tv question, but you can find quite a bit of Cobert stuff online (the only way of getting it in the UK as far as I know). Youtube him...
Rands got ideas about growing a web dev company ;)
Great job posting Rand, and excellent news that you are getting Matt a play friend =) May the force be with you...
Dude, Matt already has a developer play friend. Me! :)
Hey :) nice job description. I can't relocate to WA, thus can't apply, but best of luck for the winning candidate.
You forgot the worst requirement:
must be allowed to work in the US ;-)
